Question about 1997 Mercury Cougar XR7

97 Mercury Cougar hard starting in cold weather

My father in Kent Washington, has a 97 Cougar that sometimes starts and sometimes doesn't start. Generally, he can get it to start after a couple of starting cycles when the weather is cool. He reports that if he pumps the gas pedal it tends to start on the first try. My question is; Is there a "cold-start" injector on the V6 fuel systems? He also has told me that he has never had the inline fuel filter changed and he is the original owner.

No ,this vehicle doesn't have a cold start injector . Plus the fuel filter wouldn't have anything to do with it either , cold or hot would act the same . I would have it checked with scan data , do you know what that is ? Could be coolant temp sensor , mass air flow sensor .

Testing an not guessing is the way to a proper fix !

SOURCE: 1999 mercury cougar. won't start...cranks...battery ok.

V6 ? 4CYL? Have you verified SPARK? Did anyone check the "fuel pump inertia switch?" Its in the right front kick panel. If it was a "Anti-theft Issue" the light would be on or flashing.

97 cougar starts but wont stay running shut s right off

Can be many things. Should have generated a "check engine" light. Which it may have but dies too soon for you to notice.

Check your fuelpump pressure at the fuelrail test tap. Gauges may be available at Autozones' tool loaner program. If you have residual pressure, then an electrical problem exists. For starters, the fuelpump relay may be bad.

Ford uses a 2 computer system in some models. A starting circuit gets the engine going and then after 10-15 seconds the main computer takes over. The second computer could be bad and fails everytime the transfer of operation takes place.

Sometimes the O2 sensors do not provide the feedback the engine controls need to adjust the engine for running. The parts work for the cold start, but when warm, they fail to provide the info the components need to adjust everything and the engine just dies.

The fuelpump could be failing once the initial start is over or the relay is kicking out. That is why measuring residual pressure is important.

I have a 1997 mercury cougar starts up it surges up and down in drive it cuts off

You will need to have the Ford dealer run an active engine running test with a scan tool to see what fault shows up.

Same car, same problem. Finally fixed by changing out PCM (computer module behind passenger side kick panel). Car runs much better too.
