U need to have codes read that are stored on the cars computer. The engine light on is an indication that something is not operating properly, and u confirm this by your description of the cars performance. U can have the codes checked for free at most car parts stores. The codes are read by a scan tool that is plugged into a port in your car and it reads the stored codes on the cars computer. The stores employees will tell u what the code(s) are, and suggest what should be done to correct the problem. Writer the codes down for future reference. Let me know how u make out.

Check fuel pressure. Bad pumps will work, just not enough pressure. If the engine light is on, check codes. Your's has a fuel pressure sensor and module that could go bad.

No power to Horn, lights, blinkers, ac and heater on 99 Passat V6

It could be your convenience control module. I had issues with my interior lights, alarm, windows, etc. All of that is controled by the ccm. In my car, 1999 passat sedan, it was located under the driver's feet. So I pulled up the carpet and the wire splices going into it were corroded. So I cut them and respliced. Problem solved.

2001 Passat -

I have the same make and model. Overall a really nice car. I was driving down the freeway yesterday when the car jolted and I lost the gear lighting on my dash. The car drove in 'limp' mode the remainder of the way home. I started it up this morning and it ran fine for about 15 minutes then it went back to 'limp' mode and the dashboard gear indicatior lights went out again. Research indicates this is the Transmission control module which is located under the passanger side floorboard. In my case there is moisture in this area
