Speedometer 2002 jeep liberty, the instrumentation works fine except the speedometer. It will fluctuate from up and down continually while driving. I have no idea how fast I am going. Any idea would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have the same problem. I called multiple dealers and all but one told me that I need to replace the vehicle speed sensors on the transmission ( input and output ). One other dealer said I needed to change the sensor in the Differential. So I took the majority along with the reading from the diagnostics and replaced both sensors on the transmission. Nothing happened. Today I found a post that said it's the sensor on the differential that works the speedo and the odometer. Can anyone tell me if this will actually fix the problem or should I break down and pay the dealer. The part I purchased was 04799061AB. Is the sensor in the differential different? Any help would be appreciated.

Had the same problem. Replaced the sensor, but it still did it. My private mechanic looked for a short in the wiring but couldn't find it. Finally broke down and took it to the dealer. They called me 15 minutes after I dropped if off and said that they had found a "fray in the wiring" and had fixed it. I don't know where it is, but the dealerships know about it - just aren't telling. BTW my mechanic had another 02 Liberty come in with the same problem 3 days after the dealer "fixed" mine!

Speedometer doesn't work on 2002 jeep liberty

If the speedometer does not work but the odometer does, the problem is in the speedo cluster. If neither work, it may be the speed sensor on the side of the transmission.

Speedometer not working on my 2002 jeep liberty.

The routing of the speed sensor wires is located on the rear differential. The problem is that they rub on the E-brake cable and once the wire is exposed they short and the speedometer and any other options running off the speed sensor quit working and that includes the transmission shift points and can cause the torque converter to not unlock and cause stalls. We went to a dealer and got the replacement kit for $32.00. He also took the time to encase the wires in a plastic tubing to avoid this problem again.

I replaced the speed sensor on my 02 liberty and the problem still exists....what do I do???

Hi

Check if there fuses related to the speed sensor or speedometer. there could an expose cable that might have triggered the speedometer to work.

2002 jeep liberty speedometer stopped working

My guess is that the speed sensor has gone out or the wires that go to it have been knocked off somehow.

Instrument light on

That light comes on when you're in 4 wheel drive high. Should go off when you disengage your 4wd stick, or button.

I have a 2002 Jeep Liberty Limited with the same problem. The main problem I have found to be the routing of the speed sensor wires located on the rear difrential. They are 2 blue wires on my jeep and probably the same on yours. The problem is that they rub on the E-brake cable and once the wire is exposed they short and the speedometer and any other options running off they speed sensor quit working and that includes the tranny shift points and can cause the torque converter to not unlock and cause stalls. I am having the same problem for the third time and chrysler and jeep are both aware of the problem and unwilling to repair the problem or post a recall.
