Automatic Transmission Shifting problems

1988 Ford F150 truck. When I start it up and drive it, it shifts from first to second no problem. Then shifts to third ( I can feel it) but the engine seems to race. It will do this for about two miles and then it settles down. It sounds like the clutch fan is continuoisly spinning but I know the engine is reving. It is not slipping either. Can you help

I have a 1991 Ford F150 XLT Lariat 302 with the E4OD Automatic transmission, and mine will shift from 1-2 roughly, then stay in 2nd indefinitly or until I slow enough to shift back into 1st. This just happened and I bought this truck from a guy who had the trans rebuilt recently. I just changed the trans fluid filter and then added 5 quarts of oil. It was the Advance Auto ATF fluid. I also have a loud squirting sound that happens under load and when i make a high speed left turn.

That sounds like a complicated issue. Is it a manual transmission??
You might buy a chiltons repair manual for the vehicle as I can't see anyone being of any use on here without being able to actually look at it. I could be wrong though. Good luck anyhow!

Let me know what type of transmission it is and I'll ask my friend he's a real mechanic.

Actually ask him yourself email info[at]establishedauto[dot]com his name is Gino.

I'm just "good with autos"

No reverse is the most classic symptom of a failed transmission. You must have the transmission rebuilt or replaced with a Motorcraft re-manufactured unit (my choice)

Trembling while shifting on '02 F150 King Ranch

First-NEVER add anything to an automatic trans.
Your vehicle should use Mercon V --PERIOD
Change it at least three times, to get the Lucas out.

Have the TPS Sensor checked out.
You most likely have a Tran Pack Solenoid going bad.
It is bolted to the valve body. You can do it yourself

Sounds like torque converter, or pump in the transmission is going bad.

Erratic shifting on 2001 f150 pickup

How many miles on it? Do you mean overdrive? Over drive will clunk when shifting in cruise. Mine lasted 212,000 miles but I have heard of them going out after 120,000, depends how you drive. That Traney is good till it starts acting up then you will need a complete overhaul. I got it done for $1800. Do not go to a Ford dealer, they quoted me $3200.

look on the back of transmisson there is a modulator vavle it a small round looking cylinder it should have a small rubber hose hose connected in the centre of it if it has come off put it back on and road test truck .If the hose is still on start the truck with park brake on an go under truck and pull the hose of the valve and put your finger over the hose and feel for suction u should have sucion if there is suction replacs valve . if there is no sucion follow hose to the engine some thing is blocked or the hose at the engine has come off .if the car has backfired in the past it blows them off
