Question about 2000 Nissan Maxima

1 Answer

2000 Maxima GLE engine has trouble maintaining idle in cold temperatures 40 F and below and has been close to stalling. If engine is not warmed up, when shifting into drive, I sporadically feel little power until engine has warmed up. Also can hear a hissing sound from under the hood as I accelerate. Noticed this problem at the end of winter '08 but went away once weather warmed up. I was told this could be an O2 sensor but I'm looking at all possibilities. Thank you Ken S.

I have a similar problem, the hesitation issue went away as a result of changing the knock sensor ($400) and the all of belts. There is still a hissing under the hood near the center of the firewall and there's a whinning noise when I accelerate, but doesn't seem to be causing any probelms with the exeption on a small loss of mileage; a few miles a tank, any there's still the motor consistantly idling unevenly, possible do to that hissing (maybe a compression problem. Any help would be appreciated.

The intake plenum gasket is leaking! I have seen this many times before. If you can turn a wrench it will be an easy fix, otherwise take it in and have them replace the gasket. Oh, I almost forgot, the plastic intake manifold needs to be replaced as well. The inserts that holds the manifold in place come loose and that is the root cause of the problem.

Chevrolet Caviler 2.4 - 2000 Stalls at idle (stopped) once car is fully heated up.

Check coolant temp sensor. These fail often and cause all kinds of mystery problems. This unit acts much like a choke on old carb engines and can fail in different ways. Most common (I think) they fail such that the ECU thinks the engine is cold when it has begun to warm and thus the ECU delivers too long a pulse to the injectors so that the engine runs way too rich. I think it is also possible for the sensor to fail at any point between cold and warm such that the fuel mix is wrong except for the particular temp at which the sensor is stuck. Also O2 sensor has some fuel "trim" input.

When i start it it starts fine but if it is cold it will not idle i have to keep pushing gas pedal

remove and clean idle air control ( IAC ). this is what controls idling of engine, evedently the iac must be stuck. if the engine is cold and the iac is working properly, then it should go up to about 12 or 13 hundred rpms then gradually slow down to proper idle. my 2000 malibu 3.1 idles at 650 rpms when warm.

I have a 2000 nissan maxima and when its cold outside my car wont idle

if this only occurs in temps below 40 degrees its mostlikely the gasket for upper half of intake plenum is leaking.have seen several do this .as soon as engine warms up everything expands and it idles perfect.not a real fun job to replace though.try tightening bolts slightly...if condition improves this is the cause of your issue.let me know how you make out with it.

2000 maxima gle - will start and idle, put engine dies when give gas. All was fine until I replaced the starter. When I put it back together is when the trouble started. I've checked vacuum hoses and...

Can't really say. But you need to put a fuel pressure gauge on it.
Could be EGR, throttle position sensor, etc., but don't see how the starter could be related.
Have to wonder if you left a wire off or put one in the wrong place.
The main power for the fuel injection and ignition come off the main starter positive. And a cold start wire comes off the starter solenoid.

My car dies when it idles too long. What could

The most common problem with 2000 Maxima stalling when idling is the end of life of its mass air flow sensor. It is usually accompanied by the sporadic lost of power and increased gas consumption. You can buy the replacement sensor on the net for ~$70 and install it yourself in 5-10 min. It is also highly recommended to vacuum the sensor housing after removing the old sensor and replace the air filter as well. I did it on my 2000 Maxima GLE three weeks ago, after experiencing all the issues above for almost a year, and all problems had gone for good. Good luck!.

2000 maxima has erratic idle on cold days and will stall out on extremely cold days. Also, have noted antifreeze leak (on ground) on those really cold days. Car runs fine once it reaches normal operating...

It sounds like an engine temp sensor is open.. When your engine is cold or anti-freeze is cold your ECU or ECM gets a signal from the temp sensor for cold engine start. It would make sense that it works fine when hot because the resistance on the sensor is a lot lower. Take an ohm meter if you have one and check the resistance across the temp sensor pins. When the engine is cold the resisitance should be really high. Start and warm up your car to normal temp and check it again. It should be a lot lower now. If not replace it. Hope this helps.
