Yes the CV joints do have a good bit of travel in and out. You should be able to just it back in as easily as it pulled out. Also, unlock the steering column, it will allow you to move the steering knuckle around if need be to make things line up. Also, if the ens of the ball joint that goes up inside the control arm is strait ,not tapered they are a bugger to get back together, the joint has to be pointed exactly at the right angle to match the hole. If its rusty clean it up with some abrasive paper and lube it with some anti seize or something, this helps thins slide back together, and if you ever have to take it apart again it will be way easier to separate the joint. If you CV joints don't move in and out freely there could be something wrong there or you may have pulled it out of the trans axel and it doesn't want to go back in.

My 86 volkswagon cabriolet died while on a freeway on ramp and would not start again. (Have since changed the spark plugs and wires) but will still not start. Suggestions on what to check next?...

I would check the timing belt. Verify that the fuel pump underneath the passenger rear seat is coming on when you turn on the key. I would also check the fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay that's mounted under the driver's side dash, if the fuel pump isn't running. Also, check the distributor rotor, I had one break and fall apart on my Jetta.

How do i replace an ignition switch in a 1992 vw cabriolet? I have no idea how to get to the ignition switch, its hard to take off the dash board and i dont wanna mess with the steering column and trigger...

Getting to the ignition switch housing is going to be a task in itself however once you get there you will need to drill a small hole into the houseing of the ignition switch small enough to push a retaining clip down in order to remove the ignition (key). Drilling the hole in the right place is critical, you have to measure approximately 1/4" back from the edge of the lock from the top of the off position (when you remove the key), now measure about 3/16" left of that mark and make a mark, this will be where you will drill a 1/16" hole, becareful not to go deeper than an 1/8" (tip: just drill slowley pull back and check to see if you've got past the housing.
Now look down the cylinder (where you removed the lock from) and you will see a retaining screw which holds the ignition switch, unscrew it and replace. Now put it all back together again.

you must remove brakes, then remove axle nut, then remove upper control arm and finally tie rod stabilizer, remove axle from car then bearing can be accessed. this is a difficult job that requires special tools so be careful

grease the would creak if you were!!!! you need to do that once a year or check them if they need it

Stuck hub

Hub should not come needs to be replaced. Drive out whats left of it however you can. be careful not to beat up opening or it may give you trouble re-installing. U joint comes apart just like those on any driveshaft...There isn't enough room for grease fitting when assembled so get grease in before putting back in car. Control arm bushings should have no play.
