I have run into this problem on engine swaps before, it is usually an antitheft issue, relearn the antitheft system and you should be fine. you will need a factory (or equivalent) scanner.

have checked the idling speed? it might be higher than norm

run a trouble code retrieval test on the fuel injection computer?? Try disconnecting the MAF sensor and see if it runs better, if it does then the problem is with the MAF sensor, the MAF is in the air intake hose to the engine, fairly big with a multi-wire connector on it.

There could be a massive engine vacuum leak or a stuck open idle air control valve,
vacuum leak is more likely, that would account for any high idle.

check the ignition switch, sounds like the fuel pump run
circuit is not working, there are 2 ways the pump gets power, when it
cranks it gets power from one set of ignition switch contacts, when it
starts and you let go of crank the the fuel pump gets power from a diff
set of ign switch contacts, the switched comes apart
where it is crimped togearher and causes this problem, the engine will
run a short time until the fuel in the lines is used up and then stall.

    hope this hepls

    regards

Getting no power to fuel pump fuse no power to ignition fuse

no engine stated.!

fuses good,? 12vdc on both sides key on?

spark good on all cylinders.??????????

this is first. not fuel, fuel is dead last.

if above is ok the engine runs on test fuel.

if the engine runs for say 3 seconds on test fuel, and SOUNDS

great, that means the spark and engine are ok, leaving>?

FUELING only.

easy , right?

if true all that, then the scan tool is next.

wont buy one,? like most here? (you cant fix cars with no scan tool)

make up or buy a NOID lamp. (a small 12vdc lamp)

see if the injectors are all firing.

if not, the PCM is cutting fuel.

if the injectors fire (electric pulse) then it may be fuel relay not closing.

did you check for 12vdc (11vdc min) at the pump? cranking

you must crank it and check,

there are 3 kinds of cars. (we assume last)

1: pump runs keyon, full time, (illegal now)

2: pump runs for 3 seconds, and stops keyon, (for priming only)

3: runs only cranked, (most cars) and runs running engine.

see that logic there?

some cars cut pump and injection with no spark. ( to cut fires)

this logic is inside the PCM brain, called firmware.

just assume the car is smarter and use #3 above. on all cars

and I win..

the scan tool will show errors cranked for 5 seconds.

does it?

now why i cant leave generic help and answer specifcially

no engine stated.

to fix them you need to know whats there, first.

the line up

1.6 L E-TEC I4 (petrol)

1.8 L Family II I4 (petrol)

2.0 L Family II I4 (petrol)

next time post the engine in your car.

open hood , look up see EPA sticker there and engine type?

To much fuel

Hello Brad,

Will it start and run for 2 sec every time you try, or does it not start at all after the first attempt? My thinking is: immobiliser - do have a second key for this vehicle? If so try that next, you might have the transponder chip gone down in the key.

An immobiliser problem will normally let you start the engine every time, but will not run longer than a few seconds. A blocked exhaust also gives exactly the same symptoms as this, for example if your catalyst had broken up and blocked the exit pipe. I have seen this many times and know of many very experienced mechanics who have been caught out with exactly this problem.

Let me know if neither of these fix your problem.

When driving along the road the engine cuts out .the engine will start .i start driving and it cuts out .can you help thanks

Yes I can help but you need to tel what kind of car it is ( Make, Year and Model, Engine size, and counrty your driving in.) Does the check engine light come on when the motor is running? ( the light is yellow and looks like an engine block and has a CK in the middle) If the light is on does it stay on? When it's running does it run like it always does? Were any repairs reecently done? How long ago was the car serviced ( oil change , tune-up, Exhaust repair or replacements, This kind of thing) How long have you had the car and how long has the car been doing this? I'll be glad to help you.

Polo 1.4 cutting out every 30 seconds

Do you hear the fuel pump cut off? Once your pump reaches pressure it should cut off. Also you can try and remove your fuel cap and see if the car will run just know it could cause your check engine light to come on so do not run it very long. If it continues to run with fuel cap off I would say it is your fuel pump. Good luck with that and the best thing to do is get a fuel pressure gadge and see what kind of fuel pressure you are running. I know there are some parts houses that will loan or rent you tools. Good luck.

Engine cuts out while running

The problem is your ignition switch. You have to have it changed. If you start your car, dont let the key come completely back, just kind of hold it forward a little; not in the start position but not letting the key completely return to the on position, you will see the car stays running. If you let go of the key and it turns off, your problem is bad and you should not drive it. If it stays on, it still is dangerous to drive, but you should drive it somewhere were it can be replaced.
