Since its only when you o into first gear you might want to have the clutch pdal free play checked and make sure its not the clutch going out if its not either of those its probably a faulty synchronizer of gears which is grinding hope this helps

Yikes! I would consider having a trans specialist take it for a test drive and see what he/she thinks.
It sounds like either your syncro for first is chipped up or that your 1st gear splines are. With a 178 rounds on it, it could be about time for either ?¿?¿
Should you require further assistance , please feel free to elaborate your concerns.

When started from cold my tdi vw bora crunches into 2nd gear and slightly crunches again into 3rd gear after 10 to 15 mins when the car warms up it is totally fine what could cause this?????

try changing the oil, paying great attention to manufacturer's recommendations. Could be oil is way too thick and is sticking things that are supposed to slide, until it warms and thins.

Is the transmission sealed on a 1999 VW Sharan?

you need a haynes manual.because some new cars dont have dip stick to check tranny fluid.you have to locate a check fill plug on automatic transmission differential.its located on the right side.front of drive axle.for volkswagon you got buy the tool to squirt fluid in tranny.still get a manual it will show you place to put tranny oil.

VW sharan auto gearbox will not engage in reverse.

Your reverse band is gone, any gearbox specialist can do this but cost about £500-£600, Good luck

Crunching Gears

thats common for the reverse gear to grind if you go right for it i always go to fist then reverse. it sounds like you might have a week slave cylinder and the pressure is to low to go into a high gear does this happen in 5 th also or only 3 rd?

VOLVO S60 2004 D5 3RD GEAR GEARBOX CRUNCH

Sounds as if a synchronizer is going out in 3rd gear, or 3rd gear maybe stripped. I would get it checked by a tranny (transmission) shop before it ended up costing you more money. There is a possibility that there may be some shavings on that gear as well, which would just need cleaned.
