Car not starting and have new battery

Car would not start and replaced battery. Car will start after letting sit for several hours and want to know how I can eliminate starter or fuel pump as being the problem without changing both.

sometimes it does but slower than usual. Sometimes, not at all but after waiting several hours and trying again it will start but still slower than usual.

Thank you Toyota Ed for your patience. I had not had the starter checked but I did tap on the starter and eventually it did start. It has started several times since but I am inclined to believe that it is the starter.

I would rather change the contacts if it would solve my problem and I didn't tie several hours up in it.

I have the same problem, i first notice some corrosion on my terminals and decides to clean them. After cleaning them and reinstalling the old battery, the car wouldnt start and no sign of power. The next day I went and bought a new battery and there was sign of power but the car didn't start. Went to autozone to get the old and new one check and both test good and they gave me back my old one. Put the old one back in and again no start, got the car jump and it start. HOORAY, no not really, decide to drive around the block, as soon as I turn the corner the car shut off. Then attempted to put the car in neutral to move it somewhere out of traffic, the shifter was stuck and could not move it into neutral. Then I jump started it again and again it start, let it run for about 20 mins and cut if off, thenr retried to restart, again No LUCk. Is it a battery problem only or could it be worst?

Have you had the starter checked? Just take it to a mechanic, and have him listen to the starting. A good mechanic will be able to tell. It is hard for me to comment, as I cannot hear what it is doing. I would rule out fuel pump, if it is cranking "slower" than usual. When the battery was replaced, were the positive & negative cables dirty or corroded? I need more info to hlp you out. Please respond

When you attempt to start the car, does the engine turn over?

You are quite welcome. That is what FixYa is all about. Helping poeple such as youself. Now that you have told me that tapping on the starter makes a difference, It is my opinion that you do indeed have a starter issue. You have 2 options: First, you could take the starter off, and replace the solenoid and replace the worn internal contacts. This is the lesser cost option. The contact wear issue is a very common failure; I change contacts in starters 2-3 times a week. The second option is to replace the starter. If you want to go the contacts route, post back to me for detailed information.

Go and get the 2 contacts, and the solenoid plunger. Then take off the starter. I will walk you thru it. It is not that hard. Takes about an hour.

Got car headlights on for 7-8 hours, and my car won't start now.. got it pushed but didn't work. got battery charged but nothing.. what to do?

It's all a matter of power.

Disconnect battery - charge for at least 12 hours - 8 amp charger - measure voltage - let sit for 24 hours - measure voltage - if not at least 12.5V then battery is bad and replace.

93 buick lesabre with newer battery test shows charging system normal will not turn over in morning. Something drawing down battery overnight. When jumped will start and run fine during the day.

First, verify that none of your lights are remaining on, especially the TRUNK LIGHT and the GLOVE COMPARTMENT LIGHT.
Second, after you have driven the car for several miles, turn the car off and let it sit for one to two hours. Feel the back of the alternator. If it is hot, REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR, and your problem will stop (bad rectifier diode).

As a simple preliminary test, try disconnecting the battery before you let the car stand for a while and see if it will start when reconnected. (If this will not affect radio codes and alarm systems). This will give you an idea if it is the battery or something in the car that is draining the battery.

Check the Tension on the Belt. If it is even a Little loose it will not allow the Battery to Charge. Check the Alternator Also.

Car won't start!!

AmyLynn001, 1st thing, let the car sit for a couple hours (because u smell gas, it's definitely flooded). Turn the key to start (do NOT touch the gas pedal!! Cars are designed now to start w/out touching the gas pedal. If u do, u will flood it, and make it even more difficult to start) When u turn the key, only hold it to turn the engine over for no more than 10 seconds. If after the 10 seconds it doesn't start, turn key off, wait about 10 seconds, repeat. (this is to reduce wear and tear on the starter, and to not run the battery down real quick). It sounds like several problems coming together caused this. U state that the car needs a tune up, it's likely the overheating, need of a tune up (car not performing to optimum efficiency) and pushing on the gas pedal, resulting in flooding, all came together to create this no start condition. Eliminate any one (preferably all!) and u should be able to start the car. So, hopefully just letting it sit and not touching the gas pedal while attempting to start will be enough to get u back on the road, then get that tune up soon. Let me know how u make out.
