Question about Honda Accord

1 Answer

My 89 Honda Accord LX 5 speed wants to die when its in neutral after being warmed up and drove for about 10 minutes, or I drop it down into second around a corner. I just had the muffler and exhaust fixed right when this problem started it sometimes does ok then it starts to idle high then really low and wants to die. I also had the idle adjusted after the exhaust was fixed. any suggestions?

If you didn't have the exhaust replaced by a shop , I would check to see that the flow direction on the new muffler is correct. It should have an arrow indicating which way the flow direction is supposed to be right on the muffler itself. A muffler hooked up backwards would cause excessive back pressure and cause this type of symptom.

Let me know if you need any more on this.

Ensure your spark plugs, wires (ignition coil and spark) and your filters (air and fuel) are within 2 years of installation It's erratic at 800 rpm as the engine is cold and they like the 2200 range for 3 minutes before they kick down on their own. Press the pedal twice before inserting your key. The owners manual states depending on the outside temperature, the engine will require more priming. Update if possible.

I have an 89 Honda Accord lx and it idles too low

The idle speed for my 88 accord lx is 700-850 rpm for standard idle speed. The stalling is a seperate issue. When were plugs, wires, air/gas filters and distributor last checked? How long has engine been running for when you stall? Is the temprature gauge high? Any lights coming on when stall occurs? I am not a mechanic, but a DYI'er. These are common questions I am always asked when troubleshooting my Honda. :)

it is probably your distributer. It has a internal amplifier and when it gets hot, it quits working.

There are bushings on the shifter rods where the transaxle and the shifter rods connect and they are worn out. Replacing these will solve that problem. I had one do the exact same thing a few years ago and drove me nuts. This is most likely the problem. Either that or the transmission mount is severely worn out. Check that as well because they can imitate one another.
