Question about 2004 Ford Freestar

Gas gushes out when I pump gas into my Ford Freestar.

I go to pump and it won't let me pump and then it goes awhile and spits or gushes gas back at me. I have never had this problem with other vehicles.

I thought it was the pump but it has happened at 2 different gas stations. ( I bought my 2006 Freestar used and have only had it for 2 weeks.)

I've had the same problem with my 2004 freestar. There is a canister filter and possibly a vacuum pump located under the body on the driver's side in front of the rear tire. This catches the gas vapors, etc. when you fill the tank. I don't know exactly how it works, but there are three rubber hoses coming off it. You can try blowing them out with compressed air. Be careful because one goes to the fuel tank and you will see the tank expand. This fixed mine the first time. The second time it didn't, so I just unhooked one of the hoses, and it's worked fine since. I don't know if this is a good solution or not

I'd start a lawsuit against ford. Thats pretty dangerous!
You can at least talk to the dealer and have them look at it or something.

I have a 2004 Freestar and we are having trouble putting gas in cause it spits it back out when we put it in fast.

run the fault codes and look for an EVAP problem not venting the tank
reduce the fuel flow from the station pump by not opening the trigger so much
turn the nozzle around in the inlet tube so that the fuel doesn't switch the nozzle off

Have a 2004 mustang. I can only only put a few cents at a time when trying to put gas before it spits back out

Sounds like vent tube is not operating probably. When gas goes in air in tank needs to go out. When air can't escape its keeping gas pushing up and kicking pump off.

I have an 06 freestar. New water pump, new thermostat, new radiator. Temp guage redlines with acceleration. Goes back to normal when I let up on the gas pedal. Very frustrating. Any suggestions?

Did the mechanic mess up the Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor connection? If it's dangling near the Tach feed you might get this result.
Check with this diagram.

2004 ford freestar only surges at 50 plus mph?

Sound like you may need a fuel tank OR a filler tube. First though you need to call FORD and see if they have a RECALL on the fuel tanks for this issue. This could be causing you surge as well, OR if you haven't already changed the EGR Valve I would suggest you fix both of these problems. Hope this helps and have an awesome day.

My 2004 freestar refueling problem

This is a venting problem. When the gas goes in, the air has to come out. If the air vent is blocked, the fuel wil spit back as the air forces it's way out the filler pipe.

Sometimes the vent pipe is inside the filler pipe, sometimes it runs alongside the filler pipe.

For the 2003 Winstar, it is a separate fresh air hose. Frestar was it's replacement in 2004 so it may be different. Check for a plugged or kinked hose.

Gas backs up and sprays out like its full, but its no where near

This is usually caused by the temperature difference between the Gasoline in the fuel station ground tank, and that of your fuel tank.
Without spending money to improve on your fuel tank venting system,,the only thing i can suggest is to pump the fuel in more slowly.

Gas overflows when fillingtank.

This sounds like the gas tank vent pipe is obstructed.

It is the filler neck it causes splash back.
