The car was connected to jumper cables the wrong way
After the car was jumped with the positve connected to the negitive and the negitive to the postive, the car will not communicate with diagnostic scan tools. the car runs but very poorly like its in failsafe mode. what control module controls communication with the diagnostic port? 1999 audi A4 1.8L were can I find used control modules for this car?
Re: The car was connected to jumper cables the wrong way
The problem is likely the fuse on the back of the stock radio. The VAG tool communicates through the radio, believe it or not. Your radio should also be dead after the reversed battery jump. If this is the case, pull it out of the dash and there's a 7.5 amp brown fuse alongside the cable harness on the back corner. Replace this and see if the problem is fixed.

Re: The car was connected to jumper cables the wrong way
I'm surprised that you haven't had problems with a dead battery yet. Reversing the polarity at the battery not only doesn't do the battery much good but also will kill the alternator.
I would have that checked.
The car's computer may have some internal protection against having the wrong polarity applied to its power inputs but the kind generally used is limited to short-term misapplication and probably failed in seconds, leaving the computer open to random damage.
This could prove to be an expensive repair to get the car back to being whole again.

https://www.reddit.com/.../do_not_connect_your_jumper_cables_... RedditOct 25, 2012 - Do not connect your jumper cables backwards or bad bad things ...What I'm trying to say is, does this usually happen when you hook the cables upwrong? ... So basically there is only one way to find out for sure what going to .
if you have jumper cables look at the cables there should be plastic cover on the clamp one will be red one will be black the red one should hook to the positive + side of the battery the black side to the negitive - side of battery same way on car that is giving the jump
Don't do that, if you don't know how the jump start Mercedes Benz be careful it's so dangerous, if you do one simple wrong thing when you jump start it can damage your all electronic management system if in case you did the wrong thing you may have to spend $ xxxxxxx, if you don't know how to do that get help from someone who know how to do it, keep in mind don't mix up negative and positive cable when you jump the battey at least jest for a 000.1 second, that's enough for get damage, battery jump start point in engine compartment have a good look, has covered by read cap, open cap and you can see copper point in it fix the read battery cable (+ positive cable) on it then connect other end of same cable to the + terminal of battery again I would like to remind don't mix up, after connect + terminal please double check did the right, then connect - cable on to the Body ground connection near by positive point you can see another probe for ground it's located near the shockabsober top mount, after that connect other end of negative cable to the negative terminal of battery before connect it once again check other 3 connection are in right order

put the positive ( red ) cable to the positive (+) terminal on the battery and the negative (black) to the negative (-) on the battery and do the same with the other end of the jumper cables to the donner car/battery making sure you connect positve to positive first then negative to negative
Sounds like you have a bad battery. The quick way to diagnose it is to first ground the negative jumper cable to a metal point that is attached to the car frame of the Jeep. If you can't find one just attach it to the negative battery terminal on the battery.
Then detach the postive battery cable from the battery (you can do this first if you feel safer). Next is to hook up the jumper cables to the car that is going to jump your jeep. Make sure the positive jumper cable is not touching anything on your Jeep first.
If you have friends this makes it easier!
Now you want to connect the positive jumper cable(red) to the positve battery cable on the Jeep. Make sure that the cable ends are not touching the Jeep at all (very important)
Now you want to go start the jump vehicle and make sure the cable still is not touching. Then go try to start the Jeep. If the battery was bad the Jeep should fire up with minimal effort. If you are still getting the same issues then it is either a bad cable or possibly a starter motor that is starting to go (high resistance).
If it starts bring the battery down an autoparts store to be tested.
key off and out, diconnect negitive side of battrey then postive.clean terimals, charge battrey, connect postive cable (with key off)connect negitive.and start.
your dead battrey is taking up a big load on system,so when you boost it the dead battrey is taking it all the starter is geeting vey little.thats the clicking.
if you dont have a charger dicconect both terminals the same way again, put the jumper cables on the dead battrey.let it charge battrey for 10 15 mins .the longer the better.remover jumpers.
with key off and out conected battrey terminals.connect jumper cables and start.
let me know if it start or not hopefully the key hasnt lost its coding.
it could, to clear the check engine light, you or someone else can unhook the negitive battery termanal, wait about 2 minutes and unhook thev positve cable, wait a couple minutes and rehook positive cable then negitive cable. this should turn off light. if it comes back on, you'll need to have it diagnosed.
you can jump directly to the battery. the procedure for doing this is as follows connect the positive cable to the dead vehicle(yours) then connect the ground cable either to the battery or to the engine block. then conect the positve cable to the jump vehicle then connect the ground. start the jump vehicle and rev engine to 1500-2000 rpm for 2 minutes. let vehicle idle for 5 minutes. then try and start dead vehicle. sometimes the whole thing takes 10 to 15 minutes to be successfull. please rate the solution.........thanks
