Question about 1999 Toyota RAV4

1 Answer

Oil type Just wondered what weight/grade (whatever it's called) would you recommend for a 1999 Rav 4 with 122k miles. A friend last put in 20W50, saying it was better for the engine. What do you say? Thanks much! Cheryl

Ceryl, I would use the 20W50 oil only if the car is using oil. A lighter grade is better in most instances as the engine warms up faster - very important - and usually gets better gas mileage. Use a premium synthetic such as Mobil 1, or the Castrol brand. I would use 10W30 oil but it is best to always check your owner's manual for their recommendation.

Oil light comes on and then a light tapping is heard in engine

Try an oil change with the manufacturer recommended oil. Make sure it is the correct weight, type and grade. I never recommend synthetic for older cars with high miles. You can also buy oil additives at the parts store designed to increase oil pressure and quiet noisy lifters/valves. Oil light means low oil pressure, usually due to broken down old oil, dirty oil filter, or incorrect oil weight used.

On the Oil cap of the 6 cyl. engine, it says 5-40 SH II. What does the SH II stand for and what would be the recommended oil weight for an engine of that age with 124,500 miles on it. Is any particular...

Normally this would be a grade of oil but I don't recall them using anything that thin in Camry's in the US. That maybe an Asian type of oil. In most cases in the US they used a 5W20 grade of oil. If you picked this vehicle up in Asia somewhere I do not recommend adding oil to it until you do a complete oil change so you don't mix them.

What type of oil and weight is used to change oil every 5000 miles?

have you looked on the cap where you add the oil?...some will have the type of oil required, printed right into that filler cap...check it out

of course, you could also check your owners manual for recommended grade ..if you still have it.

Yes it would. 2W20 is fine when then engine is new. Upon piling up the miles on the engine a heavier grade of oild is needed. the same for hotter climates evn if the engine is new

What kind of motor oil do i put in my truck?

Depends on the mileage and where you live (cold/freezing), but the manufacturer recommends 5w30 out of the gate. If you have over 75K miles I would go with a slightly thicker oil 10w30. Change the oil and filter every 3K miles. A good grade Castrol in 5QT containers from WalMart makes good economic sense.

What kind of oil does a 1999 Camry need?

5 qts of 5w-30.

I personally prefer MOBIL1 brand ..You can decide as per your wish..

SOME ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

There are many grades of oil weights whichever you want to call it. Heres how it works
Oils main job is to keep the engine clean, lubed, running cool ect. The grade usually 5w20 5w30 or 10w30 ect. Theres many of them as well which can be consfusing at times. Oil weight is measure by cold and hot . For ex: 5w30 The 5 weight is when the oil is cold and 30 is the weight when its hot. The reason being is the the less the weight when its cold the easier the oil can get to the top of the engine and lube it to prevent cold engine damage. Once its heated up its a 30 weight and is thick enough to protect your engine.( most engine damage is caused when the engine is cold )You should use the proper grade that your engine calls for. Being toyota its probably 5 or 10w 30.If you live up north i would recommenda 5w30 weight. You can easily find out which grade you should use by your owners manual or under the hood on the oil cap. However there are synthetic oils as well. Synthetic oils have man made additives to help the engine run cooler, the oil is naturally slicker to help it move around easier and boost performance of the engine resulting in better mpgas well. They have alot of additives to prevent engine wear ect. One good thing about a synthetic oil is you can go longer on the oil change. Instead of the normal 3,000 miles oil change you can go 4 or 5 k. Theres also synthetic blends. Which are good too but youll have to read about it more to decide for yourself what you think you need. Synthetic oils are better for someone who travels alot or puts extreme conditions on an engine such as idling for long periods of time stop and go traffic its really good for anything to be honest.. I would recommend using synthetic if you decide to keep the car for a while. It has many benefits.

Best oil to use in 2006 nissan maxima

Depending on the weather condtions where you live will determine the type of oil you should use. If you are in cold weather most manufactures for newer cars 2003 and up recommend 5-30 weight detergent oil. if it is hot you may want to go to 10-40 detergent. If you have the engine broken in say 30,000 miles I recommend my customers use 5-30 synthetic oil, it has better lubricating and heat removal qualities that regular motor oils don't have. also oil filters are important too. Iprefer fram oil filters, the heavy guard filters. they are more expensive but filter much finer particles. and last longer. So the better the oil and the better the filter the longer your engine will last. Don't use parfin based oil as it will damage your engine.

2002 honda civic LX oil change

A synthetic is good if you don't mind going 15 to 20,000 miles between changes. If you're one of the compulsives that change oil every 3000 or 5000 miles, don't bother with synthetics, because they're expensive. You probly need a thinner grade of oil, tho, like a 5-20. Thinner grades will help your gas mileage, but check your manual.
