My guess would be a switch (park interlock, brake interlock, etc.), a main fuse (located under the hood), or a starter solenoid. One easy check is to turn the key to start and simultaneously wiggle the shifter or pull it in to the Neutral position.
First thing is to check is the ignition fuse/relay under the hood for a blown fuse or bad relay. If everything is ok then set parking brake with truck in park/netural and have someone to turn the ignition over to start and at the same time use a test light to check for fire at the starter solenoid. If no fire then the ignition switch or netural switch on transmission is causing the problem. If you do have power to the starter solenoid then the problem would be either the solenoid or the starter drive locked up on the flywheel. Be sure to remove the negative wire from the battery if you need to remove the starter. Hope this will help you.
There is an electric selinoid that releases when you depress the brake pedal. It should be under the cover were your shifter is. That can go bad. You might have a blown fuse or the switch on the brake pedal could be bad. You should have a place to remove a cap and insert you key to get the car into netural.
do the brake lights work ?
they probaly do not, there is a brake light switch on the brake pedal lever, there is most likley a broken wire at this switch. If wire is broken repair wiring.
If this is the problem and you are unable to repair your self,do not start vehicle, put key to run position, then pull shifter into netural, then start vehicle and now you will be able to drive to get repaired.Remember if this is your problem you have no brake lights,be careful.
