Re: Check engine light
The light indicates a problem with the thunderbird. You can bring it to most parts stores where they will plug a scan tool into a port under the dash of your car, and the scan tool will read any codes stored on the cars computer. This is a FREE service at most stores, check w/ stores in your area. They can tell u what the codes are, and what should be done to correct the problem. Good luck

engine will not turn over.first check battery volts, should be 12.6 volts. if not battery is weak or dead make sure battery cables tight and clean them if you see a lot of corrossion use baking soda and water neutralize corrossion remove battery cables clean them with wire brush also clean battery post terminal with wire brush also wear safety glasses protect your eyes now.try charging and jump start vechicle see if battery good or starter at fault bench test starter and starter solenoid if starter dont work problem in the starter.if starter good.you have blown starter fuse bad starter relay if dash lights dont light up when you turn on the ignition switch and battery has 12.6 volts.check ignition fuse if fuse is good dash still dont light up,you could have faulty ignition switch.if all is good you could have bad clutch safety switch for manual transmission or faulty neutral switch for automatic transmission.if you have the late model cars from 1996 to 2012 has the theft security system which will cause car not to start and try turning engine over with a large wrench to make sure engine not locked up.
Turn on your lights and try to start; if the lights dim a little but nothing turns, you probably have a bad (corroded) connection either at the battery or the ground strap between engine and chassis.
If the lights dim a lot, then it's time to try turning the engine with a wrench on the crankshaft.
Do NOT have the ignition on when trying this.
If the compression is normal, it will take some muscle to turn the crankshaft.
If it is frozen, you may have a seized bearing or other reason that the engine is jammed.
Try this...As that is the equivalent to a service engine soon light....PRESS THE ODOMETER TRIP BUTTON WHILST YOU TURN THE IGNITION ON. DON'T START IT! HOLD FOR ABOUT 15 TO 20 SEC'S TURN THE IG. OFF RELEASE THE OD. TRIP AND START THE CAR.. TA DA!

Hello. this is a warning indicator. this light is on because there is either a problem with the engine control system, or even possiblity the abs unit. you will need to have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes to see why this light is coming on.
The SERVICE (Wrench) telltale is pulled to ground by the powertrain control module (PCM). When the lamp is pulled to ground, current from the ignition circuit flows through the indicator lamp, allowing it to come ON. The PCM will turn the SERVICE (Wrench) telltale ON for all non-emission related DTCs that require that a telltale be turned ON (some DTCs do not turn on a telltale but are stored to aid in diagnosis).
The SERVICE (Wrench) telltale will also be turned ON if the ABS control module has detected a fault in its own warning indicator system. If the ABS system cannot turn on its own telltale, a message will be sent to the PCM through the class 2 data bus (circuit 1807) to turn on the SERVICE (Wrench) telltale.
The SERVICE (Wrench) telltale will be turned ON for 2-3 seconds when the ignition is turned to RUN for a bulb test.
If this vehicle has a rotor assembly then you will need a timing light and a wrench to loosen the lockdown bolts for the rotor assembly. Connect the timing light as directed for the light. The number 1 cylinder will be at the front of the engine. On the harmonic balancer, the main pulley at the bottom front of the engine, you'll need to clean the pulley to find the timing mark. You should also see a tab which has tick marks and numbers on it. You may want to mark the timing mark on the pulley with white chalk so it stands out better. Loosen the locking bolts for the distributor just enough you can turn it with a little force then start the engine. Check the timing by pointing the timing light at the marked area and tab that has timing marks. Make sure you can see the mark in the flash of the light. You want to wait 5 or 10 minutes after starting the vehicle to allow it to warm up, make sure you have the Heater and AC turned off. Check the timing and make sure you are between 8 and 10 degrees on the marks. You may have to estimate this. Turn the vehicle off. It should shut right off, if it acts up or continues to run turn the ignition back to run and adjust it a little more. Continue to do this till the engine shuts off when your turn the ignition off and starts right back up. If you have any questions about anything or any procedure I've given you I recommend you get the Haynes Repair Manual on your vehicle which will have photos you can use as a reference.
"Check engine light" EMISSIONS WORKSHOP! Do you want to shut it off???
After reading all of the negative comments and how much money Passat owners have spent due to this manufacturer's problem, I am going to save the day and save you $$$ by showing you how to "reset" the diagnostic computer which makes the "emissions workshop-check engine light come on! (This is the same thing the VW dealer will charge you hundreds of dollars to do.) To turn off the "Check Engine" (Emissions Workshop) light, simply follow these 5 basic steps:
1. Pop open the hood.
2. Insert the key in the ignition and turn without starting the engine until all of the dash indicators light and warning tones sound.
3. With the key still in the ignition, use a 10mm wrench or socket to loosen and completely disconnect the negative (-) battery cable from the battery. Wait about 60 seconds before reconnecting.
4. Re-connect and tighten the negative (-) cable to the battery and close the hood.
5. Start the engine. THE "CHECK ENGINE" LIGHT HAS GONE OUT!
If the light stays on, then there really is a problem. If it has turned off, be glad, but don't be surprised to see it come on again in a few weeks. If it comes on again, simply follow steps 1-5. Remember... This quick repair is for those who just can't stand looking at this light or afford to visit VW every time this light comes on. If you feel the need to service the vehicle, service the vehicle. I hope this has made your "NIGHTMARE" a little easier!!!
If the service light is on in your TrailBlazer, open the door, turn the key to ignition position and push the accelerator pedal 5 times, the service light will flash. flash your high beams and you're done.
