Question about 1998 Chevrolet Blazer

1998 Chev S10 Blazer Transfer Case not shifting into 4x4

Have tried disconnecting battery to reset. It started to shift properly for a short time and then stopped. How do I determine if my problem is the shift motor or the module. The vehicle has a standard transmission.

Does the 4 hi light blink when you try to put it in 4 wheel drive? My did that and it was the module.

How do I repair the four wheel drive on a 1999 Ford Ranger XLT?

It depends on what is wrong , is the 4x4 light flashing ? Are you aware of the complexity of the 4x4 system ? Has a electronic control module , has the ability to set an store DTC'S - diagnostic trouble codes !
Transfer Case The four wheel drive system is an electronic shift 4X4 system that allows the operator to choose between three different modes. The operator can switch 4X4 HIGH modes at any speed. To engage or disengage 4X4 LOW the vehicle speed must be less than 5 kph (3 mph), the brake depressed, and the transmission must be in NEUTRAL.
The shift motor sense plate, an integral part of the electronic shift motor, informs the generic electronic module (GEM) of the transfer case shift motor and contact plates A, B, C and D position.
The digital transmission range (TR) sensor is located on the LH side of the transmission, and informs the GEM when the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position.
The electronic shift motor is mounted externally at the rear of the transfer case. It drives a rotary cam which moves the mode fork and range fork within the transfer case between the 4X4 HIGH, 4X4 LOW and 2WD range positions.
When the GEM verifies the completion of the transfer case shift from 2WD to 4X4 HIGH (reading the contact plate positions), the GEM will then energize both pulse vacuum hublock (PVH) solenoids (supplying ground for 45 seconds). The PVH solenoid will allow a HIGH flow of intake manifold vacuum to the "wheel end hublocks", engaging the wheel end hubs to the front differential and transfer case to achieve four wheel drive.
Here are just a few DTC'S the system can set an store in the module !
P1804 4WD High Indicator Circuit Failure GEM GO to Pinpoint Test C . P1806 4WD High Indicator Short to Battery GEM GO to Pinpoint Test C . P1808 4WD Low Indicator Circuit Failure GEM GO to Pinpoint Test C . P1810 4WD Low Indicator Short to Power GEM GO to Pinpoint Test C . P1812 4WD Mode Select Switch Circuit Failure GEM GO to Pinpoint Test A . P1815 4WD Mode Select Switch Circuit Short to Ground GEM GO to Pinpoint Test A . P1820 Transfer Case CW Shift Relay Circuit - Failure GEM GO to Pinpoint Test A . P1822 Transfer Case CW Shift Relay Coil Short to Power GEM GO to Pinpoint Test A . P1824 4WD Electric Clutch Relay Circuit Failure GEM GO to Pinpoint Test A . P1826 4WD Low Clutch Relay Short to Power GEM GO to Pinpoint Test A . P1828 Transfer Case CCW Shift Relay Coil Circuit Failure GEM GO to Pinpoint Test A . P1830 Transfer Case CCW Shift Relay Coil Short to Battery GEM GO to Pinpoint Test A . P1838 Transfer Case Shift Motor Circuit Failure GEM GO to Pinpoint Test A . P1846 Transfer Case CONTACT PLATE "A" Circuit Failure GEM GO to Pinpoint Test A . Now are you sure you really want to mess with this ? You would need a factory diagnostic scan tool to check this out before you start replacing parts !

2000 chevrolet blazer 4x4 fuse keeps blowing

Don't know the vehicle specifically, but if you've replaced all the components that are run from this fuse then the only thing left is the wiring loom itself. Maybe some foreign object (rock or stick) has damaged the wiring and the wire in question is shorting to earth somewhere in the loom. To check this all you need to do is work backwards from the furthest point. That is disconnect the actuator on the transfer case and turn the switch on. Then disconnect the sensors and turn the switch on, disconnect the actuator on the front diff and turn the switch on. If after everything is disconnected the fuse still blows, then it MUST be the wiring loom. Have you done any " home handyman" wiring under the dash? maybe you nicked a wire by accident? It's a fiddly process, but give it time and you'll get there.

I have a 1994 S10 Blazer with 4.3 Vortec engine. My 4X4 is not working properly. It is sort of intermittently working. When I depress the 4X4 LO position on the switch, there is no indication of anything...

If I'm not mistaken, there should be a module or relay. Not for sure where it's at. Heard of these going out and not being able to switch into 4 wheel drive. I know on a 200'? Ford F-250 they have a motor on the side of the transfer case. That switches it into 4 wheel. Signal from 4x4 switch is sent to module then to the motor that engages the transfer case. Hope this makes sense. Hope this helps.

Have you performed the system relearn after you replaced these parts?? This must be done after the TCCM, transfer case motor, or switch is replaced. DIsconnect the battery for at least 2 and a half minutes. Reconnect the battery. Cycle the ignition key 5 times to the run position, then to the off position. Allow 1-2 seconds after you turn it ON, before you turn it OFF during the 5 cycles. After this start the vehicle, and the system is now reset. It may or may not fix your problem, but it needs to be done after any 4x4 part is replaced.

Can a 1998 4x4 S-10 blazer be dinghy towed?

Yes it can, just place your Transfer Case in Neutral position.
Shifting into NEUTRAL
To shift the transfer case to NEUTRAL do the following:

Make sure the vehicle is parked so that it will not roll.
Set the parking brake.
Start the vehicle or turn the ignition to RUN.
Connect the vehicle to the towing vehicle.
Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N).
Shift the transfer case to 2HI.
Simultaneously press and hold the 2HI and 4LO buttons for 10 seconds. The red NEUTRAL light will come on when the transfer case shift to NEUTRAL is complete.
Shift the transmission to REVERSE (R) for one second, then shift the transmission to DRIVE (D) for one second, or FIRST (1) for vehicles equipped with a manual transmission.
Turn the ignition to LOCK.
Place the transmission shift lever in PARK (P), or FIRST (1) for vehicles with a manual transmission.
Release the parking brake prior to towing.

Shifting Out of NEUTRAL
To shift out of NEUTRAL:

Set the parking brake and apply the regular brake pedal.
Shift the transmission to NEUTRAL (N) and turn the ignition to RUN with the engine off.
Press the button for the desired transfer case shift position (2HI, 4HI, AUTO 4WD or 4LO).
After the transfer case has shifted out of NEUTRAL the red light will go out.
Release the parking brake.
You may start the engine and shift the transmission to the desired position.
Excessively shifting the transfer case into or out of the different modes may cause the transfer case to enter the shift protection mode. This will protect the transfer case from possible damage and will only allow the transfer case to respond to one shift per 10 seconds. The transfer case may stay in this mode for up to three minutes.

NEUTRAL: Shift the vehicle's transfer case to NEUTRAL only when towing your vehicle.
Good luck and hope this answers your question.

1996 chevy blazer will not go into 4wd hi but it will go in to 4wd lo. when you push the 4 Hi button it just flashes and then does nothing.

The major components to this system are a shift control motor that is mounted to the transfer case, and a shift control module that is behind your center console. since the transfer case is still shifting into 4wd lo, the shift motor is still moving somewhat, so the most likely cause is the shift control module, but there isn't an easy way to troubleshoot between the two...
