Question about 1994 Pontiac Grand Am
Baffled sound, lack of power, violent shaking motor, pops once in a while. thought maybe timing was off but havent been able to check it yet. put injector cleaner in it and it cleared up the motor shaking a bit. can hold gas pedal to the floor and car has no power at all. stalls once in a while. any ideas would be appreciated. if you need more info on the car let me know
CHEVY AND PONTIAC use a doubei exhaust system on some vechiles, camaros, firebirds, grand am's. it is a exhuast pipe inside a exhaust tube (the outside) when you look at the system from underneath it wil probably like real good. sometimes that is decieving. check the exhaust pipe output at the back of the car, have someone who knows how to start the vechile (do not use children) and have them start the engine with park brake on and the tranny in "P".park. put your hand about 3" from the tailpipe and there should be a goodo flow of exhaust, if not, ask your car starter, to step on the gas slowly while you still have your hand3" from the exhaust. if there is no noticeable difference, it is probably with in the exhasu system. chances are you may have to replace all of it, but, start at the bacl, follow the exhaust until you can see a connectio,. you have 2 choices here, try to remove those nuts and bolts or cut them off completely. Have your assitant start the car again, and check the exhaust. keep in mind the closer you get to the engine it gets really hot, especially the cataletic convertor, they can get up to 1600 degrees F. mucho hot, cook your skin, get sick and die. worse case scenarios's. continue up the exhuast until you get to the Y in the pipe, do not cut this section, it is only one layer and it is VERY expensive. You shold have noticed a difference at you second cut on the pipe, if not continue carefully towards the engine. as you are doing the cuts, look towards the engine in the pipe, if the 2 layers are round, continue forward to the next cut, if you can getr the bolts of the muffler flange, do it, it may be just a plugged exhaust but being this old it would not be a bad idea to just replace everything from the header pipe (THE "Y"). that is your choice, but I recommend just replacing the complete system. having someone do it can get expensive, so check out a NAPA, CHECKER, IF YOU ARE IN CANADA, CANAIDIAN TIRE and see if the price is cheaper by awhole lot, but if it is withn $25.00, get the exhaust store to do it. always check at least 3 different locations for estimates on the job and compare it to doing yourself.
I hope this helps your out and good luck. any questions, email me at firstname.lastname@example.org and I will try to assit you. I am in the middle of a pack and move, so I will try to get back as soon as possible. good luck.
