I have a 1996 Ford Explore, replaced the sensors, tuned it up, rebuild transmission. When I am at the light it just cuts off, sometimes backing out of the drive way it cuts off, it surges. Could it be the cadillac converter. Ofcourse people around here are stealing them off the cars.
Which sensors have you replaced? How many miles on your vehicle? You can rent a scanner from your local Kragen/Schucks/O'Reilly or Pep boys or Auto Zone. Pull the codes and you can usually find the definition online. does it have loss of power under acceleration or load (going up a slight to moderate hill. or with it loaded down)? If you have an infrared Thermometer you can check the temp. of the Catalytic converter(s) as well. the front of them should slightly cooler then the rear (within about 100-150 degrees) It the outlet temp. is 200 or more degrees, that is an indication that the vehicle is running rich and the Cat is only symptom of a larger problem. It could also be the muffler itself. if the internal baffling has come apart and is plugged it will cause loss of power and stalling. Use a vacuum guage on an intake manifold vacuum port. such as the power brake booster. normal vacuum is between 18-22 in. Hg. (Inches of Mercury) anything lower or dropping vacuum is excessive back pressure in the engine. Good Luck!

Re: How to tell if my cadillac converter is bad.
I would take it to get it tested some places will do it free, Schuck's will and some other parts stores, also I would get a diagnostics done on it. Then they will give you the code and the meaning for it.
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

torque converter is not unlocking.put it in nutral before coming to stops. if it stays running and dont buck you got a bad converter which means the transmission has to be pulled to get to converter.dont let a shop tell you, you need to drop 2 -3 grand for a transmission rebuild or replacement.
I need more feed on your car.. to help...Transmissions have plenty of funtions. In order to diagnose the problem.. follow these steps.. turn on the car..step on the brake and accelerate at the same time.. but not to much, becareful,, this is to test the converter connected to your transmission.. It serves like a clutch with its planetary gears.. It has to have enough pressure on the oil and pump must work well also in combination to make your car ruin smoothly.. your converter could be bad not the ******.. let me know if you have more than 100,000 miles.. because if you do.. you might need to replace the converter and the clutches... on the ******.. these transmissions dont last long.. past 100,000 miles...if you do need to do that.. you can get another transmission for 400 dollars.. for that car..maybe even 300.. they are used. You can also rebuild but if yoiu do.. change all external sensors on the ******.,, speed sensor.. rings, filters, clutches, converter and belt. and oil filter . more solutions about ****** for free at www.bestdirectorysolutions.com/vehicle How to rebuild your self.
Hello and welcome to FixYa!
Looks like that you have a bad TCM (transmission control module). If the TCM is faulty, you'll surely have unusual transmission behavior. I strongly suggest that you have it checked and replace if necessary.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!
try checking the transmission fluid level (engine running) also make sure the transfer case isn't in neutral. If the transmission is bad take it to the scrap metal recycler and sell it, it isn't worth repairing unless it is a exceptionally nice 96 Exploder.
P0717 Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal
The system uses a reluctor wheel and a magnetic sensor to aide in shift patterns. If the sensor wiring, sensor or wheel inside the transmission become damaged, it can trigger this code. This should be looked at by a trusted transmission tech in your area. Cadillac does some wierd thing things when it comes to placement, wiring and repiar. Get someone who knows Cadillac to get this done for you. It will save you a lot of heart ache and cursing at the car. Hopefully it will just be a bad sensor, and you will be back out on the road in just a afternoon. Let me know if you need anything else or wish to tackle it yourself. I think I can find some instructions.
I bought a 1996 Ford Explorer. I just got my transmission rebuild and it still seems like my car not picking up the speed properly? also the overdrive light constantly blinking when I drive sometimes. Do you have an idea about what the promblem might be?
I would go to a parts store and ask for the to take a test to it(it is free) schucks does it. Or get it a diagnostics done on it but it would be a good idea in order to get some thing like that done to see what is going on under that hood.
