Question about 1997 Toyota RAV4

97 toyota rav 4 dies at accel.

The Rav has been dying for almost 2 months now. Sometimes while your at a red light or a stop sign, the car's rpm would drop causing the rav to hesitate and die or sometimes just hesitate and then it catches itself again. (sucks really bad when i'm on a busy road and it dies, then i have to restart the engine, feels like im driving a manual and stalling first gear even though i don't, lol.)

Tried Changing spark plugs, spark plug wires, flushed out all the water from the gas tank. Planning to change the distributor cap tomorrow. The car starts Perfectly fine, Perfect when rolling, It just hesitates when your about to accelerate from a red light or a stop sign.

Any inputs to whats wrong with the car?

Thanks, I remember doing what you said above a few times and it doesn't seem to work.

on a side note: if it was the fuel pump, wouldn't it be hard to cold-start it?

No, because if it's it's the coil in the pump it could start and run fine until it gets to a certain point and gets hot and opens.

Go to auto parts and the agent will put the meter on your car to read your computor, this might help also. Sorry it seems like a runaround but sometimes it's hard to find the problem on some cars.

this happened 3 times the first 2 times after waiting for 12 to 24 hours i would go and try starting again and after 2 or 3 trys it would start and stay running, how ever after a day or so it would die in the same manner either pulling up at a red light or stop sign. sometimes i could re crank it and it would start and run again. but this time it died and will not stay running at all

Most likely its your fuel pump. when the rpm's start to drop just give the gas pedal a few pumps and you should be good.

According to the description on eBay a 2000 rav 4 transmission should fit in a 97 rav 4.

I have a 2007 rav 4 the engine light will flash and the rav feels rough the engine or trans won't shift then it stops and works fine

The flashing check engine light means there is a serious problem with the performance of the engine. You need to get the computer scanned for trouble codes next.

Yes there is also a fuse box under the hood. The schematic for fuses should be in the fuse box cover.

One of the dash board lights on my 2007 toyota rav 4 won't cut off, what is wrong with it? It's not the oil light

Sounds like the Orange engine light is on? If yes, the 07 Rav 4 is a great car but suffers greatly with Lambda faults. You need the code read to be sure plus there are 4 lambda's on your car.

If it is a Red triangle light staying on then it could be low brake fluid level.

Toyota rav 4

I work for Toyota, and I will be glad to provide you with the actual answer:

The RAV/4 product is available in two models, a 4WD model and a 2WD model.
The difference between the two is on the 2WD model, there is no driveshaft going under the vehicle to the rear wheels, and no rear differential. There is no "RAV/2"; both models are called RAV/4's.

There is a lot of common confusuion about how the 4WD works. It is full time 4WD. In other words, it is always in 4WD. It does not "kick in/kick out/automatically engage", or anything like that. It is 4WD all of the time. But, when I say "4WD", that is sometimes mistaken for "all wheel drive", and, in this case, the RAV/4 is not "AWD". What this means is that if you raise the RAV/4 up on a lift, and put it in gear, 1 rear and the other side front tires will spin. True "all wheel drive" would have ALL 4 wheels spinning. This is not the case with the Rav/4. What the RAV does have, making up for not having "True AWD" on the 5 speed model, however, is a switch that locks the center differential in the transfer case, which, when engaged, applies a method of "locking" the 4WD system for maximum traction, but it is still not AWD. The automatic version doe not have this ability.
The last "true AWD" vehicle for purchase was a 1970's International Scout.
If you are considering purchasing a RAV/4, that is a very good investement. They hold their value quite well, and are virtually bulletproof; I do not make any "money" off my RAV/4 customers...
Just "gas station work". Very nice cars. I hope that this helps you, please feel free to comment back with any otherr questions...Glad to be of assistance.
