Question about 2000 Mercury Cougar

1 Answer

Car is trying to crank over, will not take a jump. 2000 Cougar

My car started lastnight about 1130 with no problem. This morning about 7:00 the car would not start. The ignition is trying to turn over, I smell that the car is getting gas, I can hear the fuel pump kicking on. The car is trying to start but it just won't. The 2000 Cougars does not have a distrbutor. Can it be the coils?

I had the same problem in my 02 Eurospec XR. The first aspect of it was my coil pack. replaced coil pack and it had a rough idle. The second issue was plug fouling. Replaced with Bosch double platinum and hasn't had an issue for 6 months now.

TRYING TO START CAR IT JUST CLICKS BUT IF YOU JUMP THE STARTER IT WILL START

sounds like you need to get the battery checked as well as wire connections between battery and starter. 12.52 is marginal as when you crank the starter the voltage probably goes below 10.0 volts and when you jump it the voltage is at the proper level to allow cranking.

Are you saying the engine will not crank, or not start ?
If it won't crank, have you had the battery tested ? Is it draining power overnight ?

Did you verify that your battery is not the problem. Easy way to do this is hook up a voltmeter to the battery and try and start the car. If battery voltage falls below 9-10 volts you need to replace your battery. Even though your lights work the battery may not have enough capacity to turn the starter.

have the battery cables been checked thoroughly? A small amount of corrosion will effect its starting capabilities.

Had a new alternator replaced this fall in my 2000 Cougar, then stored the car. The battery is about 2 years old. Now the car will not start. I can not get it to go into neutral, so I can push it out of...

U need to have battery power to shft it out of park, it is locked out by a safety feature called the park interlock, this means the brake pedal and lights have to work to release the shifter, so u need a battery jump or charge.
