Question about 2004 Pontiac Sunfire

Speedometer, RPM, and Gas gauges out of whack

My 2004 Pontiac Sunfire gauges like the speedometer, rpm and gas gauges are all improperly positioned. Like it says when im stopped its at 30mph, The RPM goes to 7 when im only doing 3, or the gas gauge is all the way to the left beyond full when i know i only have half a tank.

This has been happening for a while and now all the gauges will not go back to where they should be. Please help! Is there any way to reprogram them back??

when it is warmer outside and i drive the car for a long period of time, the tach will slowly progress to spin all the way to the right. Now the speedo is doing the same. It is stuck at 40km.

My daughter's 2004 Pontiac Sunfire is doing the same thing. It is so aggravating. All the gauges on the dash have quit working, the light in the radio has quit, the driver's window won't go down, etc... It was working fine and then well you know the rest. I am so disgusted and so is my daughter. She is a new driver and was so excited to have a car and.... If anyone can help, please notify with a solution.

On the 03-05 Cavalier instrument clusters this is a common problem, it's caused by failing stepper motors on the cluster's circuit board. It can be repaired though, check out this site for more on how to get it fixed - Cavalier instrument cluster repair

The problem is in the ignition cylinder lock.
The body control module (BCM) is what controls the theft deterrent system on the 2000 Pontiac Sunfire.
It can be reprogrammed, but is complex to do.

im not certain, but i believe that the gauges are electronic. and when you were working on the radio you may have accidentally touched the wrong wires together shorting out the console. i would check the fuse cor the console.

The ecm codes we read from a 98 pontiac sunfire are throttle position sensor low voltage, egr valve open throttle pintle position, theft deterrent crank signal malfunction, serial communications...

Hi, airbag deployment rarely causing damage to the wiring in the dash. The gauge cluster may of been damaged internally, but this usually shows up right away after repairs are done. I would check the connector on the PCM it is a cam lock design and if its been damaged or not closed properly it can cause crazy things to happen to the gauges. Good luck.

Go to the fuse box and change the fuse for "Gauges". I think this might solve the problem.

check to see if valve cover gasket is leaking oil onto spark plugs...causing a misfire; if so replace valve cover gasket; spark plugs and spark plug wires.

Pontiac Sunfire Dashboard Guages don't Work

Dashboard gauges have a wiring problem. Most Sunfires have these especially late models. It's a common defect. While the gauges will run fine most of the time, the primary instigator is heat. The more the car heats up inside the cabin, the more the gauges will stick. So keep the inside cool, and you'll be fine. Trying to replace with Chevrolet Cobalt gauges. I'll tell you if they work.

I have the same problem.. i installed a toggle switch for the fuse so at least I can reset it while driving.. its still a pain so Im thinking my next step will be to drill a hole through the plastic and put in a small metal post to stop the tach from going past 7

has anyone taken theirs into a shop?
