Question about 1984 Dodge 600

3 Answers

Car dead. 1984 Dodge 600 2.2 Fuel injected 4 cylinder.

Car was running OK. Tranny was slipping - not sure if this is related to condition now. Drove car - ran fine. When got back in, door lights on as usual. When cranking ignition, nothing. Radio. lights all work. Any ideas? Thx - John in Conn.

Did try this several times. No luck.

Someone told me this might be just an ignition fuse. Is there such a thing?

  • jbarsevich Nov 19, 2008

    Nothing clicking.

Could this also be a defective Ignition Time Delay Relay?

    Thx - John

Drove home from work and car ran fine. I have a 1984 Dodge 600 2.2 EFI. Got into car next morning and it would hardly run...nursed it to work and it died going into the parking lot. Would not start for several days, and then it started, but ran horrible and died halfway home and has not started since.

You mentioned Tranny earlier. Have you checked your safety neutral switch at tranny?

If I remember correctly, you probably have a start relay on drivers fender area, under the hood that may be shot or stuck. You might find about 3 or 4 that look the same or similar. (approx. 1' x 2" ) with silver cover on them usually. They'll all have wiring & connectors going into under side of them. Have someone cycle the key back & forth to start position and see if any are clicking. You should hear at least one clicking. See what you find and get back, we'll advise from there.

Did you try moving shifter while trying to start? Try to start in Neutral?

Issues with my 1998 Dodge grand Caravan 3.8L engine

Very typical of a fuel delivery issue. Start by changing the fuel filter (inexpensive). If that does not correct the condition, check the fuel pressure. If fuel pressure is insufficient, check the operation of the fuel pressure regulator and replace if necessary (also relatively inexpensive). If that does not help, you'll need to replace the fuel pump.
You may have additional issues, based on your description of the "flashing" warning lights. Once you fix the fuel delivery issue, you will likely have additional repairs.
Regular maintenance would have avoided the compounding of issues.

1998 Suzuki Esteem ran out of gas. Still won't start after putting in gas. Is there a way to prime it.

putting gas where?
gas tank
or doing the Test fuel procedures?
is this a barn find/ field found car, or it ran perfect last week, and DD for months. (daily driver?) all this maters and is unstated.
1.6L or 1.8L engine, G16 or J18 suzuki enignes? major different they are.
with old engines, we do this and win every time.

all FUSES good, (EFI and spark fuses up to 3 or more)

1: compression test, sparks out , wide open throttle. warm to hot engine.
180psi on all,, good, if like 90, the timing belt slipped. if J18. we have
3 folks now on our forum that managed to slip a chain (they ingored huge noises from engine,,,, amazing)
2: spark got good on all 4 cylinders. and timed right not guessed at
using a real tool called a timing light for 20 bucks.
3: with fuel pump relay pulled i test engine on test fuel.
runs for 3 seconds, each spray and SOUNDS good.
ok it does that.. (this avoids flooding issues)
4: i put back the fuel pump relay.
and it dont start. i check for injection,
i find all injectors, dead.
the ECU is cutting injection,
i connect scan tool and see the CKP DTC errors , the CKP is dead
or CMP on G16. dead. the ECU reports them cranking only, on a dead engine.
the ECU will cut fuel if it seen spark dead.
the ECU will cut fuel if the TPS sensors signals wide open throttle cranking
i checked all that and its good.
i find fuel pressure a 0 , cranking, (one more cheap tool)
i find 12vdc good to pump cranking (a 10 buck meter at walfart)
the pump is bad. no the wires are corroded. at the pump line....
super common on old cars.

this is 1 example path of 100s.

How to reset jeep grand cherokee fuel pump

which engine of the many, ??????
no start but cranks ROBUSTLY right?
turns over means zero, the starter motor and engine both can TURN OVER thus , no meaning, What counts is the crank shaft spins.
called Cranking.

1: check all fuses on both boxes.
2: Is dash I/P cluster CEL lamp glowing keyon?
3: I then connect my scan tool and crank for 5 seconds, not 4 , but 5.
3A: got DTC's (errror) for CMP , CKP or spark or dead RPM?
thats 4 checks,, got them, ? yes, BINGO.
the ECU will not INJECT fuel of those are bad. ever.
there are exceptions, but those guys get lawsuits....
4: above is ok , i check spark (some do this first. sure thats makes sense , always)
5: ok I got spark on all cylinder, NO , fix that or do step 3 again.
6: i try test fuel, I spray it in and BAM it runs for 3sec, and dies.
if it dont run, are those 100k miles spark plugs long dead???? ever do tuneups, ever?
if runs 3 sec, and sound great. then you lost fueling.
i check for flooding only if spark is good.
if you get here, the story can go long play, as fueling is complex.
( no injections, leaking , clogged, ECU inputs all wrong, fuel pump dead or weak, FPreg fubar. long..... ask.)

Tranny problems will run for short time after startup then stop moving ,motor will still run but car wont move let it sit for some time and then it will move again

first of all, check condition of tranny fluid. if it is brown or smells burnt the clutch in tranny are slipping. if the fluid is ok and at normal on stick. then change the fluid and tranny filter. this may help. have a good one !! but if it still slips, tranny is in need of repair or replaced.

1984 Buick Skylark - 4 cylinder clutch problems

sounds like it needs the clutch replaced. Anytime it slips, it's because it's lose enough material that the pressure plate can't keep enough tension on the clutch plate and the flywheel. Likely, it was slipping and overheated, causing it to smoke(and probably smelled like someone grinding metal with an angle grinder.) This needs a clutch change, throwout bearing, pilot bearing, and a flywheel surfacing. There is no adjustment for these; the play only increases until it slips.

Car started running bad with no power. So put fuel injection cleaner in and car started running better. So drove it about 20 miles and car went dead going about 30mph and would not crank back up, what is...

If this is a 4 cylinder, then its most likely the coil. Take out a spark plug and crank the engine to see if you have a good spark. If you don't have a spark, in order, replace the distributor cap and rotor, and replace the coil. If your ignition wires are old, replace them as well.

If its a 6 cylinder car, there is a separate coil for each cylinder, so your problem is more difficult to diagnose. In that case, if no cylinders are firing it may be the ignition computer or the ignition switch.

1999 dodge diesel 2500 seems to have a fuel related problem.

Please clarify the "loosing power" does it lose power and shut down or does it loose power but will idle? Your Cummins is electronically controlled so oil condition is important, fuel leaks, oil leaks, leaks in the air ducting between the turbo and the intake, sensors, water in the fuel. Do you get an engine light when this trouble happens? Dodge uses a lift pump to carry fuel to the the injection pump, is it working?

Drove threw large amount of water!

Drain all the fuel out of your vehicle. Remove the air filter and check to make sure water did not get into the fuel injection system. If you did you will also need to drain your oil and replace that also. Last check your tranny and make sure not water is in there.

Ignition key wont turn

Make sure car is in park then try moving ignition switch back towards you and then forward as if trying to start it. That seemed to work for our 86 Dodge 600 auto.
