There is no way to check the fluid level short of removing and disassembling it.. The 96 slx tranny is a sealed system.

Auto transmission slow to change gear when cold ok hot.

When an automatic transmission is slow to change gears when cold, it is usually due to low transmission fluid levels or fluid that has become thick and sludgy due to a lack of maintenance. It is important to check the transmission fluid level and condition regularly, as low transmission fluid and dirty fluid can cause transmission issues such as slow gear shifts and slipping gears. Additionally, low levels of transmission fluid can also cause the transmission to overheat and fail. If the transmission fluid is in good condition, then the issue may be caused by a faulty transmission solenoid or a worn out clutch. In this case, it is best to take the vehicle to a qualified mechanic to diagnose and repair the issue.

My 96 Camry 4-cylinder got really low on transmission fluid and started slipping in first gear. should I do a fluid flush and add more Lucas transmission stop slip?

It's worth a try. I would suggest Trans-X. Do a fluid and filter change and add 1 quart of Trans-X instead of a quart of fluid. Then drive the car on a road trip. Get about 100 miles on it and check the fluid level. The Trans-X is mostly solvent and will evaporate off rather quickly, say within the first week, and then top off the fluid. If it doesn't work, you will be looking at a rebuild or replacement with a good used unit.

I have a 96 Chevy suburban and I was driving through the mountains and the transmission kept down shifting or slipping gears help?

Was it loaded with weight? Could have been overdrive. Vehicle should sometimes be dropped onto 3rd and left there under hilly conditions. So as not to shift too much. Suggest checking trans fluid level , possible trans filter change, or add trans cooler to keep temp down in fluid when in hilly terrain. Good luck.

Transmission not shiftin

For car not changing gears it can be shifter assembly issue, or it can also be transmission issue. Get the shifter assembly inspected with ignition OFF.

For more troubleshooting, I suggest you to get the Following help link checked, its complete step by step procedure to inspect gear shift issues: -----

TRANSMISSION GEARS SLIPPING AND FLUID LEAKING ISSUES

Transmission gear assembly and transmission needs inspection. Also check the transmission fluid level. Also is the fluid getting leaked or its low.

There are few very helpful links with solutions to troubleshoot this problem.

1995 lincoln occasionally has problems getting in gear to go. Seems like it is stuck in neutral. Lasts a few seconds then it gets into gear and goes.

SEEMS LIKE TRANSMISSION FLUID LOW.TRANSMISSION SLIPPING TRYING TO GO IN DRIVE.CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL. IF LOW ADD FLUID UNTIL YOU REACH FULL MARK ON TRANSMISSION DIP STICK. WITH ENGINE RUNNING A IN OPERATING TEMPERATURE.IF FLUID LEVEL OKAY.CHANGE TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER IF YOU HAVE NOT CHANGED IN A LONG WHILE.A DIRTY STOPPED UP FILTER WILL CAUSE TRANSMISSION TO SLIP.CANT PICK UP FLUID.

My tranny slips some times but it will catch after a few min

SOUND LIKE TRANSMISSION FLUID LOW OR YOU NEED A TRANSMISSION FLUID AND FILTER CHANGE.THE 4T40E OR 4T45E IF YOU DONT SEE TRANSMISSION DIP STICK.BEST TO DO A FILTER AND FLUID CHANGE.YOU NEED 7 QUARTS OF TRANSMISSION FLUID A NEW TRANSMISSION FILTER AND PAN GASKET.I WOULD BUY FILTER AND PAN GASKET AT DEALERSHIP.YOU NEED A LARGE DRAIN PAN TO CATCH TRANSMISSION FLUID.IF YOU HAVE A TRANSMISSION DIP STICK. BEFORE YOU FIRST BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL ON DIP STICK.SHOULD BE ON THE FULL MARK.IF NOT ADD FLUID TO FULL MARK.THEN CRANK VECHICLE LET IDLE UNTIL ENGINE HOT OPERATION TEMPERATURE ABOUT 10 MINUTES.THEN APPLY BRAKE PEDAL.THEN SLOWLY SHIFT TRANSMISSION SHIFTER THROUGH ALL GEARS 2 TIMES.THEN PUT TRANSMISSION IN PARK.CHECK TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL.IF NOT AT FULL MARK ADD TRANSMISSION FLUID UNTIL LEVEL CORRECT.

Transmission slipping

You have a problem with the bands in the transmission. They will need to be adjusted to correct the problem. Also have the transmission filter changed with new transmission fluid. Check the fluid level in transmission first,if low add fluid and test drive. If its the same as before you will need to go to a transmission place to have the bands adjusted to correct the problem. Hope this will help you.

Gear problem

OK, slipping is an internal transmission problem. If the vehicle has not been on the road for a long time, I suggest that you at least change the trans fluid. Depending upon what year the vehicle was made, electronics play some part in trans operation (later years more so than earlier ones) but from what I understand from your post, it seems more likely that internal transmission clutches are not getting adequate apply pressure, and are therefore slipping. Using lower transfer case gears puts less load on the transmission therefore making it easier to get the vehicle moving, but the slipping is likely still there. If when you remove the trans pan you find a large amount of debris in there (either metal or clutch material), or any gummy residue this will verify that the problem is inside the unit. On some transmissions you can change pressure, but in most cases this does little or nothing to help the problem.
