Question about 1997 Ford Taurus
My speedometer quit working while driving and all of a sudden the cars revs up to 4000, speedometer starts working, engine racing but not going anywhere. The rpm go back to normal car will start driving fine and speedometer will quit working again.
I just had this problem on my car a couple months ago. If it is the same problem, it is the vehicle's speed sensor. Is your check engine light on? If so, take it to Advance or Auto Zone or somewhere they can read the engine light codes and they can tell you for sure what it is, but it sounds like its the speed sensor, and if that's the case, the part is only like 30 bucks and fairly simple to change out, just one bolt and a little elbow grease, that is, if you have any experience working on cars. Otherwise, I would suggest taking it to a mechanic you can trust.

In that case I would take it to a transmission specialist.
