I just had this problem on my car a couple months ago. If it is the same problem, it is the vehicle's speed sensor. Is your check engine light on? If so, take it to Advance or Auto Zone or somewhere they can read the engine light codes and they can tell you for sure what it is, but it sounds like its the speed sensor, and if that's the case, the part is only like 30 bucks and fairly simple to change out, just one bolt and a little elbow grease, that is, if you have any experience working on cars. Otherwise, I would suggest taking it to a mechanic you can trust.

In that case I would take it to a transmission specialist.

Please Help!!! 1999 Mercury Sable doesn't seem to accelerate past first gear..engine revs up to very high rpms.

If the speedometer stops working the odometer stops also. Sounds like it is stuck in first gear. The RPM went up because the throttle was response to pedal but transmission not response. Check transmission fluid color. Whip off dipstick on a white paper towel look for gray if see any that is metal shavings and transmission is bad.

How to fix this problem?

A big vacuum leak will do this it can be from a open PCV valve sticking open EGR valve to a sticking a IAC (idle air control valve) sticking open. You basically have something get stuck and closing.

2000 pontiac grand am 3.4 motor auto trans 4 door.Car starts and drives okay motor seems to stumble slightly between 3000-4000 rpms. with car stopped in park try to rev motor will only go between 3200-4000...

Hi Tom your vehicle is equipped with a Rev limiter it will not allow you to rev the engine above 4000 with the trans in park; as for the first problem you may have one of two things, one of the spark plugs or spark plug wires is bad or you have a flat spot on the throttle positioning sensor in which case have be replaced. Good luck?

My 2002 dodge durango hits 4000 RPMs and bounces between 3000 and 4000 RPMs when I am in park and have the throttle held down. I replaced the cam sensor and it is still doing it.

this is your rev limiter stopping you from over reving engine causing internal damage. this is normal on all new vehicles. Don't know what year they started this but it goes back at least 16 yrs

1995 buick riviera supercharged after 4000 rpms i lose power seems like its not getting enough fuel. if not this what else could it be

if you are racing the engine up to 4000 rpm in park, you may be hitting the rev limiter - if while driving you have be seeing the start of an ignition problem

yes the transmission speed sensor has most likely failed, to confirm this have a trouble code test run

VSS (vehicle speed sensor) Tells the PCM (computer) the speed of the vehicle so the PCM can make the proper information to the TCM (transmission control module) to shift.
YOU are goin gto need a scan tool NOt a code reader to monitor the VSS to see what it is putting out for speed when the car is moving But I believe you need a VSS but do not not Go out and buy one until you have had it tested , and can positively confrim it is bad first. Please rate this a fixya if you find this advice helpful, Thanks Randy
