Question about 1997 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

The warmer the engine gets, the harder the truck is to shift!

This truck is a 1997 Volks Transporter 2.4L Diesel with a 5 speed manual transmission. The van has 120,000 km's and has been getting worse from when this problem started almost 3 years ago! The clutch is fine!
The effort required to shift gears is much less in the cold winter months compared to the higher summertime temperatures!
The dealer that I had purchased the van from had sold very few transporter trucks over the years and don't have any veteran mechanics with practical experience on them!
I have recently checked the transmission fluid level which was fine and leaving me to continue to scratch my head in frustration!
Any help would be great, thank's, Glenn.

Replace the fluid in clutch resaviour ALL of it
ILL bet the fluid is dark and not clear you got moisture in the fluid

water expands much more than hydraulic fluid to hot temps
making less "room" for piston travel in clutch slave

Hard shifting manual transmission - warm/hot

check the clutch operation especially the m/cylinder for failure. The fluid and the master cyl. is probably not disengaging the clutch enough. the rears will not necessarily grate as the synchros are working overtime to spin the gears for alignment because the clutch shaft is still moving under power from the engine.

I have a 1991 Ford f150 with the 4.9 engine and 5-speed manual transmission. But the 5th gear only says overdrive. Can i drive in 4th gear at highway speeds without shifting to 5th?

Sure you can, It just makes the engine work a little harder. As long as your not running down the road at 3000 rpm's all the time, it will be fine
