I just bought a 08 HHR. The remote start worked at the lot. Got it home opened the hood to check things out--took the lid off the fuse box--reinstalled it--shut the hood. Later went out and tried the remote start--will not start. I started it with the key--CEL light is on now-- two days later CEL light still on-- everything works except remote start--DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS WHAT I COULD HAVE DONE TO MAKE THE CEL LIGHT COME ON & THE REMOTE START NOT WORK?
Don't know about the cel light, but you have to set the alarm before the remote start will work. push the lock button on the remote twice, that activates the alarm, then push the start button on the remote for 205 sec. the car should start.

Check grounds. You have several in the cab. But the 2 to check are behind the kicks panels by your feet. One on each side. There are 3 to check under the hood. Battery to engine, battery to body and engine to body. Unplug them and look for corrosion. Loosen the bolts and retighten them. If one has a lot of corrosion replace it.
hood switches are quite common issues for all remote starts, if you have a visible switch under your hood, a lot of times you can bend the switch mounting upward slightly causing the hood to press the switch down further making the connection to enable the remote start. if there is a visible hood switch, you should be able to press the switch all the way down with you finger , then with your other hand press the remote start button to see if it starts. if it does then you know that's the problem. if there is no visible switch then obviously my solution will not help. the certain number of flashes will let you know if is reconizes an open door or not. check with a local shop that installs remote start systems and they may be able to help you for no charge to let you know what the flashes are telling you
If it is running rough & no check engine light on then the first thing I would to is tune it up. If you have a check engine light then pay someone to diagnosis it & go from there. Usually when the light comes on there is a more promenient issue; that is WHY the light continues to flash.
Make sure to hit the lock button twice then hold the start button until starting. There can be several issues for a malfunction. If this does not work we can definitely look into other options but the biggest reason for an factory remote start not functioning is the check engine light being on.It completely disables the remote start function. Here is a list of possibilties of why the remote start will not function.
A current vehicle DTC that illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL)
The vehicle is in valet mode.
More than 2 remote starts have been attempted.
The hazard switch is in the ON position.
A current hazard switch DTC is set.
The vehicle hood is ajar.
A current hood ajar DTC is set.
The CTD system detects an alarm trigger.
Excessive engine RPM
Excessive coolant temperature
Accelerator pedal position greater than 0 percent
Vehicle not in park
Vehicle theft deterrent malfunction
A current automatic transmission shift lock control system DRC is set.
A vehicle speed sensor signal is detected by the ECM.
Your coolant temp sensor is not registering. It probably set a trouble code, that's why your remote vehicle start is not working. The temp sensor is located at the rear corner of the engine block on the back side of the engine. This will be the corner of the engine closest to the driver. The temp sensor may be faulty, unlugged or there could be problem in the circuit. Even if you find the sensor unplugged and you plug it in, the code will have to be cleared before the remote vehicle start works again.
After searching around, I found several posts that suggested reseating all the relays and fuses under the hood. After checking, I noticed nearly all of them were not seated well. I pushed them all down and I haven't had the problem since.
first thing is to check your oil these cars are notorious for having engines that burn oil. the battery and brake light problem i had to take it to the dealer and they wound up relearning the computer i cant remember what exactly they did but it worked. I wound up replacing the engine ran about 3500 dollars. Mine is a v4 and runs like a cream puff I hope its not an engine swap
