Question about 1985 Ford F150

1 Answer

1985 F-150 won't start

I've got an 85 f150 and i cant get it to start. I was doing engine work on it one day because it was running rich. Changed the EGR valve along with some other sensors. When i hooked everything back up and went to start it, a wire to a capacitor looking thing by my ignition coil was grounded and arked. After that it wouldn't start up, changed the capacitor looking thing (which auto zone told me was something that just prevented road noise), had my ignition, and the sensor thing going into the disributor checked, and it all checked out okay. Plus the spark plugs and wires are brand new and there's gas in the fuel rail. ANY SUGGESTIONS.........PLEASE????

Does it have spark to the plugs? check the fuses, the hot lead to the capacitor is fused and is ignition power source.

If the resistor bypass doesn't solve it, another remedy could be a plug-in type engine block heater- I mean plug into household current. It keeps the engine coolant warm in the block. Every other car here in Montana uses one-works great for those below zero nights. When the wife pulls into work, just run an extension line and keep the car plugged in till time to go. Other than that, IDK, sounds like you've covered it pretty well as far as solutions.

Engine light on with restricted performance. I've scoped the issue and get a reading of PO 172. I've cleaned sensor and changed air filter. Still get restricted performance and check engine report....

this code is a rich code your car is burning too rich...meaning not enough air is mixing with the fuel...make sure you check all lines insuring that bank one doesnt have a clogged vacuum line etc..Bank one is where cyllllinder one is located or usually if your facing the bell housing while sitting in the car it will be the right side of the engine...But I would start with hoses, then go from there...

Failed smog, running very rich. changed plugs, cap rotor, wires, tps sensor, map sensor, egr valve cleaned, Has problem keeping stable ide. all over the place. Any ideas

I've seen two cases recently where it was bad distributors causing rough idle. An honorable muffler shop (not a big chain) will test your catalytic converter for free. Is a '91 throttle body? Do Fords have cold start valve or injector? This can cause rich reading if malfunctioning. Anything controlling fuel delivery into engine can malfunction sending extra fuel. When you find problem; do you know clean oil will help pass smog test?

If the engine is not over heating then it is doing its job. The constant cycling is based on the temp of the air traveling through the radiator and the a/c condenser not the outside temp so much. The start up high rev is just how these clutches work in ford fans. It sounds like it is operating correctly.

Exhaust smoke at start up

It means that the system is running rich, in other words too much fuel.

Try checking your air filter--make sure it is not dirty. Also check for a plugged air intake hose. Enough air is not getting into your cylinders for the proper air-fuel ratio.

If it has carb, the carb float is too high or sunk.
