Tank only third full but fuel gage shot up to full when driving along
Either there is a short in the fuel sender wiring or the sender in the tank is bad.The actual gauge is rarely bad.Good luck.
Else The float affixed to your fuel pump in your gas tank is stuck.
It tells the dash you ALWAYS have a full tank.
You have to drop the tank, PB Blast/WD40 the float, get it to drop down.
Finally Your unit in the tank is bad. Pull it out and move it up and down while someone looks at the gauge. If doesn't work, buy a new one. They are not that expensive.

sending unit or float in gas tank, check if any broken wires or well plugged in and then check the float for the gas.

Yes it is all one unit, and yes that is what the problem is. don't use aftermarket parts, use OEM, (Delco Remy) they are much better quality.

A bad electric connector is possible. A bad tank sending unit can cause the same symptom. Usually the sending unit is a reostat mounted inside the tank.. it changes resistance depending on the float position, the resistance change causes a different voltage to the gauge or signal processor. The reostat may be a resistive plastic strip, as the float moves a contact pointer wipes the length of strip thus the change in resistance and voltage. Clear as mud?

sound like the floater arm on sending unit is stuck.
