I also have a 1998 z24 cavalier with this problem. its actually a clogged valve w/ oil sludge. this valve is from your air/oil separator. there are 2 of them(1 is connected to the intake, the other is to the same thing where the oil cap sits on). it won't be easy but need to take out the valves and clean them. the one connected to the oil set was plugged up for me but the intake valve was fine. NO MORE WHITE SMOKES AND DRIVES NORMAL AGAIN!! don't let a mechanic Bullsh!t you and tell you it can't be that. I had to fix it myself.

It take water to make the gage work . if it a head problem i would do a compression check it should be around 125 or 150 psi if a cyclinder do not read then there your problem with the head if not a head problem and compression look good and u did not run for a long time . then the head might be ok then i would change the water pump and it should be good

The " white cloud " from the exhaust sounds like antifreeze in the combustion chamber. What engine is in it? Does it turn over when you try to start it? Did the "white cloud" have a sweet smell to it?

That white cloud is caused by a blown head gasket, the knocking noise could be, a rod bearing, thrust bearing, somewhere in the valve train. Replace the head gasket and see if it still knocks, and change the oil and filter too. If it still knocks, than you have bigger problems.

Engine over heated and will not start

Did you have oil in it. depending on the severity of the overheat you may have seized the engine. You also could have a head gasket problem. The cooling system on these little cars can overheat in heavy traffic and going up a hill a little too fast. Solution? If it started and showed white smoke out of the exhaust. Head Gasket. If it won't turn over with the starter it's seized. Both will cost a mint. If you had no oil engine could now be junk.
