Question about 1998 Lexus Gs 300

Cylindar 5 is misfiring

I have a 1998 lexus gs300 that I bought about 2 months ago, 100k mi. A week ago the car starts running like it is struggling, missing when I pressed on the gas and shuttering as it climbed the hills by my apartment. I took it to Shucks and they ran a diagnostic. Cylinder 5 is misfiring they told me. I don't really understand how the firing system on the car works, but I have read about 10 threads online, so I've somewhat put the pieces together. A brief description of how the coil system works would be helpful. After reading the threads it looks like a lot of people ran into the same code and after changing the plugs, getting new wires, and replacing the coils, the problem persisted. About three weeks ago I ran the car out of gas and because of this I am leaning towards a fuel injector problem. Any insight on this issue would be appreciated!

Your gonna hate what I have to say. :( It sounds like your on the right track, but instead of injectors you need to look at the pump Run a stronger system through the gas tank may want to buy to if it tries to stall out, but if your able to run good with no or little throttle then your fuel pump is going out, run the cleaner first if it helps not just a little but a lot then replace injector if no change I'm sorry. I would suggest Valvoline Full Synthetic Cleaner

What have you checked so far ?
You need spark at the right time, fuel to the injector, and normal compression for the cylinder to produce power.
Could be a spark plug, injector, or several other things.

Hi, my first recommendation would be to take the plugs out and visually inspect each one and check to make sure they are properly gapped, if they look fouled at all i would replace them without hesitation. try throwing a set of NGK plugs in the car to fix the misfires. other than that you may want to look at the wires. good luck joe

Check your wires and distributor. If all seem ok check timing and make sure the wires are in the right order.

'98 Lexus ES300 Won't Start--But Has New Battery!

If your is exhibiting the same signs as a dead battery it really sounds like your alternator is bad. If you are handy, you can remove the alternator and take it to an autoparts store like autozone and they will test it for you. This is not a hard job to do, usually 2 electrical connections, 3-5 mounting bolts and you have to pop the belt off. Just reverse it to install a new one. Good luck! - Nick
