At 75k miles the speedometer would illuminate only after a slight tap on the dash, soon it became a firm thump, then the entire gage cluster became intermittent, then quit for two days and magically reappeared. however the speedometer still remains dead. it would be nice to know whether i'm driving 60 or 80 mph as i'm sure the local nhp would be a lot less interested in my drive by.

The light is warning you that there is a problem with the Engine management system, I cannot and no one else online can tell you what the problem is. But I can advise you to take your car to a workshop and have it scan, the technician will tell you.
open the hood and find the speedometer cables according to your auto's manual, check to see if they are securely connected to the ports on back of speedometer. if this doesn't work. find the function button front of speedometer press and hold while starting engine, will enter function mode, press button repeatedly untill you come to auto. press and hold button untill "-" appears then release button , unit will show on screen, wait untill a line of zero's appear on screen then drive around untill you go over one mile, stop the car and press the function button again, the speedometer is now recalibrated this usually fixes many errors
most likely the mechanism has failed at the back of the instrument panel, Its not digital is it? just normal type. also sometimes the speedo cable pull back slightly into the dash the speed will still show but if it is not tight up against the back panel then sometimes the miles will not turn. You will have to remove the clocks to be sure.
Your digital dash is loosing its ability to illuminate,it's dying.Your dealer can have it repaired or you will have to get a new one.One more thought, you can replace it with one from the junk yard, but you should have it documented as to the miles on yours and the different miles on the one you would buy.
look on the left of dash for the switch you turn your interior lights on turn it see if your dash light will brighten.turn up enough brighten dash lights. dont turn until it stop or your interior light will stay on.
