Question about 1999 Saturn SL

1999 saturn intermittent run issue

1999 saturn ,
driving along when dash goes haywire, speedometer and tachometer jumping around ,at same time fuel pump relay is freaking out clicking on and off.this started off as an intermittent problem and got to the point of undrivability. when car will not run there is no fuel relay power and no spark.took it to cut rate as i used the save symptoms mode with the cruise control switch. it popped module, crank position sensor ,temp sensor, fuel relay, all at the same time. the car will not pop a code normally .you must use this option to get any information. To me it sounds like a physical short .but we have been unable to duplicate symptoms while going over all physical wiring.we have gone over it time and time this point we think it might be the brain...ANY SUGGESTIONS?

my problem is with the speedometer and tachometer falling down to zero while driving and as well at the same time the parking brake light coming on. Nothjing else seems to be affected. i have also noticed that the dash lights on the instrument cluster flicker. but not at same time as the tach, speedometer and the brake light do their dance. this is for a 1998 sl1 automatic

Exactly. Nosediving to zero speedometer & tachometer needles, brake light comes on, occasionally the lights on the dash and radio flicker. did mydotcom's solution work?

Did mydotcom's solution work for gil123p's problem? Mine is exactly as that one. Except my Saturn is 1999, with about 76,000 miles.

I think I know what is wrong.....

Tale off the fuse box cover under the hood, and look for the heavy wire on the side closest to the steering wheel, with a bolt/nut on the end connecting it to the fuse box assembly. AFTER DISCONNECTING the battery, take off the bolt and remove the wire. There should be a flat washer about one-inch across on the end of the wire. Thoroughly clean off any corrosion on the bottom of this washer with heavy sandpaper, and also clean off the plate the washer makes contact with on the fuse box assembly. Clean off any sand, replace the washer and and tighten the bolt firmly. Reconnect the battery.

Corrosion on this washer/plate causes a poor electrical connection which shuts off power to everything, sometimes for a fraction of a second, sometimes for longer. It can vary based on temperature and humidity, and gets worse once it starts.

Speedometer went haywire and car stopped

define haywire.?

dead, off, and is odometer off too?
stopped, you mean the car stalled?

when the engine stalls you see the following (driving school 101)
1: quiet , now. from engine.
2: steering and braking get harder. up to 6 times harder.
3: RPM tachometer shows 0 RPM.
4: Speed drops and lands on zero as car stops or you run out of down hill free right.

so did engine stall? does it restart,?

Typically this is a dash module issue (replacement of dash or send out for rebuild) or wire pinching of dash harness behind the dash display.

This is a result of either a bad solder job at the factory or just bad solder. You can remove your gage cluster and remove and resolder the joints at the back of the 2 indicators. there are several sites on the internet that have specific instructions.

2001 chevy malibu wont charge my battery. I put a new alternator in and new battery lights on dash come on but the tachometer and speedometer along with fuel and temp gauge drop to nothing and the car...

Check the battery charging state yourself with a multimeter. Using the voltage setting, check across the battery terminals. WIth vehicle running the charge voltage should be around 14 volts. With ignition off the battery should retain around 12.6 volts or over.

If these are the figures you are getting close to then you have no charging issue or battery issue. You need to then check the on-board computers. You will need to run an OBD2 scanner and pull up any fault codes.

Intermittant warning light after hitting pothole. When accelerating lose all dash including speedometer and tacometer.

My first guess would be a wiring problem in the engine compartment. Something is breaking contact when the engine moves back and forth.
Could be something around the battery or alternator, or a ground wire.

Tachometer does not work and speedometer is intermittent

Since the speedometer comes off the transmission and the tachometer comes off the ignition, they are totally separate except for the ground circuit. So check the dash ground cable, or add another one.

Car speedo & odometer sometimes work OK, other times not at all.

Most likely a speed sensor is going bad (most cars and truck do not use mechanical speedometer cables anymore) most sensors are located near the differential in rwd cars or near the drive shaft on the transmission. Best bet is to get a Haynes manual for your car to help locate the speed sensor. Remove it and take it to the auto parts store so you can visually compare it to the replacement. Install the new speed sensor and it should restore your speedometer and odometer.

1996 3.1L Pontiac Grand AM all gauges went crazy

sometimes when the battery is too low the gages will go haywire.check you battery terminals for good conductivity and current levels. sounds like a low current runs on 12 volts not 11 or 10. low current will give poor performance and bad electrical response.
try that first then look for shorts under the dash ie naked wires or burnt wires.
good luck.
