Question about 1997 Cadillac Seville

Brake light comes on at random intervals and goes out in seconds

I have checked the lines and fluid levels. There is a slight squealing when I apply my brakes. Could it also be a warning light for when brake pads are needing to be replaced? Thank you!

The parking brake light stays on when brake is released.

Be safe: Check the level of your brake fluid first. It may well be that you have low brake fluid.

If your brake fluid level is okay suspect the switch activated by the parking brake. And also be aware, that it can take a few seconds for that brake light to extinguish after start up..

Sounds like a brake light. Check your brake fluid and fill to the correct level if low then see if it goes out.

The Brake light says "BRAKE" is the Brake System Warning Light: "This light monitors various brake functions, including brake fluid level and parking brake application. If the brake light turns on, it may indicate that the parking brake is applied, that the brake fluid level is low, or that there is a problem with the anti-lock brake system (if equipped)."

Another is the Anti-Lock Brake System Light: "This light monitors the Anti-Lock Brake System. The light will turn on when the ignition switch is turned to the ON position and may stay on for as long as four seconds. If the ABS light remains on or turns on while driving, it indicates that the Anti-Lock portion of the brake system is not functioning and that service is required. However, the conventional brake system will continue to operate normally if the BRAKE warning light is not on."

It could also be the Tire Pressure Monitoring light. Check the brake fluid first and see if that fixes it.

Why does the parking break light stay on in my 97 Olds Cutlas Supreme. I have checked the level of the break fluid and it is full. I did have new break lines put in last year. I did have to slam on my...

Apply the parking brake with the vehicle parked, engine turned off and transmission in Park. Release the parking brake completely, then apply it again, and ensure that it is fully released. Turn the ignition on, check to see if the Parking brake warning light is on. If it is NOT on, apply the parking brake and check to see if the warning light comes on. If the light come ON wihen the Parking brake is applied,.....fully release the parking brake and check if the warning light goes OFF. If it does NOT go off, then an adjustment is needed at the parking brake switch.

Low brake fluid light comes on when its real cold

A comment from the FixYa Moderation staff:

The brake fluid actually 'contracts', as the ambient temperatures drop. The colder it gets, the more the level is apt to drop, due to this charasteric of brake fluid..

Now, couple this condition with low brake pad thickness, your light will come (the fluid is measured with a sensor in the reservoir) on when it is colder, and go off when the engine compartment warms up; thusly allowing the fluid to expand slightly.

Note that the brake fluid level drops proportionatly to brake pad wear. If you level is low enough to light the light, you are nearing the interval for a brake pad replacement. Adding brake fluid to the master cylinder is NOT advised at this point in time.

If you DO add fluid, and eventually replace the front brake pads, thereafter, the fluid you added will be forced out of the master cylinder, and it will leak all over the paint under the master cylinder. Brake fluid can and will damage painted surfaces.

Best solution we can give you: Simply replace, or have replaced, the front brake pads. The low fluid level condition will rectify itself, as the new pads will force the fluid level in the cylinder reservoir back to its proper level.

Thanks for choosing FixYa

When brake is applied, the rear light on the panel come on.

You might wanna have your rear brakes checked along with the rear brake calipers or cylinders, as well as the rear drums or discs, depending on weather your car has rear drum brakes or rear discs brakes. Some cars come equipped with brake sensors that let you know when theres a problem. It would also be a good idea to check you brake fluid level.

1994 Toyota 4x4 Brake Warning Light Going on and Off

You have one of two problems.

The most common issue it low brake fluid in the master cylinder. As the brakes wear down, the brake fluid level drops proportionally. On the side of the master cylinder is a sensor, that measures the fluid level. Open the hood and check the level. If is is anywhere close to the "MIN" line, you may have some brakes that need replaced.

The second issue, and it is more rare, is the park brake cable rusting, and hanging up.

Easy way to check either: When the light comes on, open the hood and unplug the wire going to the sensor on the side of the master cylinder. If the light goes out, your fluid level is the issue.

Thnaks for choosing FIxYa for advice!
