I can hear the fuel pump running but it acts like it wont fire
There are a LOT of things that can cause an engine to not start. The fuel pump is only one of many in a long list. Also, hearing the pump motor running does not mean it is delivering the correct amount of fuel pressure to make the engine run.
Proper diagnostic testing needs to be done to determine which SYSTEM is causing the problem (Ignition? Fuel? Engine mechanical problems/ low compression?)
SOURCE: no power from fuse to fuel pump
check in trunk for a fuel cut out switch, it shuts down fuel flow in case of an accident
SOURCE: Opening the gas pump door (Saab 9000- 1996)
is there a rip cord in the trunk usually has a little handle on it for this exact purpose. may be hidden

Hi Steve,
I had a similar problem on a full pressure SAAB 9000. With me it only happened under hard acceleration, and it was caused by the Waste Gate Controller being sticky and over-boosting the engine to the point where the overpressure switch came into play - this cuts out the engine till the pressure drops to a safe level again - hence the sudden loss of power. On the full pressure turbo's you get a boost gauge so you can see it happening, but I don't think the LPT's have one fitted - so its probably a garage job - otherwise Saab9000.com will show you how to test it yourself.
Regards
Hugh

The fuel pump is located inside the the top of the gas tank and a special tool is needed. to remove the retaining ring.Unscrew the deck in the trunk and remove it.You will a rectangular shaped metal panel.unscrew the two twist tabs and unplug the electrical connector. The electrical connector only goes on one way so don't worry about how to reconnect it.Squeeze the side tabs on the lower electrical connector and remove it.Remove the cap covering the top of the fuel lines.Make not of which line goes where.Notice a notch on the top of the gas tank because the fuel pump also has a notch on top of the housing and they must line up when reinstalling the pump.
