Yes, if done carefully, rubbing compound can be used to repair headlight lenses. there is a kit available at most parts stores, but compound and a buffer will do , be carful not to burn thru

Headlights on my 2011 kia optima are on but you cant see anything driving at night. Changed bulbs made no difference

Are the plastic headlight covers clear or not. Typically after a few years they have a pitted surface which does not let the light through. They need to be polished if that is the case. Many auto parts stores sell the product to do this.

There are products available at your auto parts store that are designed to polish your headlights back to the original sheen.

The headlight lens covers/shrouds...are pitted from sand spray. How do I remove them, to replace? Thanks Tony

you cant remove them , just replace the headlights. You can polish them, but it wont last. Auto parts store will have a Headlight Polishing kit.

I have dirty headlight covers and want to remove them to see if they can be cleaned. I have a 2001 Impala

Novus products worked for me. There are three strengths. No. 1 is a general
spray cleaner. No. 2 is a fine scratch remover that requires some elbow grease.
I find rinsing it as I work it in helps speed up the process. The yellowing and
small scratches are caused by ozone and sand blowing in the air. This product
won't make it factory new but it will give a much better cleaning than any other
product I've found. I've saved many friend's the expense of changing their
headlights.
Don't use windex or dishsoap on headlight plastic. They have ammonia in them
and causes microsopic pitting and fractures in clear plastic.
I bought my Novus products on line, saved gas running around trying to find it.

1999 taurus has foggy headlights.

Most Auto Stores sell a headlight solution that cleans the fogginess of your headlight. Assuming your headlight looks dirty and cloudy as would a pool, a simple solution is to pick up the cleaner at any auto place. That is a lot cheaper than buying a new headlight.

Lenses on my 96 merc Sable are so cloudy headlight power is severely diminished. Can these be cleaned?

You'll need the following. Painter's tape or Masking tape, 2000, 2500, 3000 grit sandpaper, bucket of water, headlight polish (PlastX, etc) and microfiber cloths

Mask off around the light so you don't have to worry about sanding your paint if your hand slips.

Soak the sand papers for at least 15 minutes. The more water the better Using the lowest grit, start sanding in ONE DIRECTION ONLY,(side to side). Keep the sandpaper wet and dip it in your bucket of water frequently. Now dry the headlight and it should look all hazy

Switch to the next finer grit, and repeat the step above, but this time go in the OPPOSITE DIRECTION (up and down). Keep using water
Dry it again, and it will look better than the first time.

Repeat the process again with your finest grit. Again, OPPOSITE DIRECTION with plenty of water. Dry it off. It should look relatively new at this point. Remove the tape as it will contain bits of grit from the sandpaper.

Generously apply the headlight polish in a circular motion to the headlight

Using your microfiber cloth, rub off .. repeat several times with FRESH rags until the polish is dry and gone.

Now the headlight will look like new

How do you remove the headlight lens on a 1998 ford escort se , the lens is cloudy and needs cleaning.

The lens is not removable. Go to Autozone and get a kit to retore your lens to clear again. About $20. You use one chemical to remove the head coat and and another to sand or clean the lens until clear. Then re-apply the hardcoat. Takes under 2 hours. Follow directions carefully

Replacing headlight assembly

have you tried the do it yourself fix? It's a kit you can buy from almost any parts store or even some Walmarts. Almost like sanding it down and then a liquid polish goes on. . . .worked great for me. Cheaper too!

Dull, cloudy headlight cover

Wet sand the light cover with 2000 grit sand paper.Use a hi speed buffer with an aggressive rubbing compound at around 2000 rpm. It'll make you light covers as clear as they were new. It may take doing this a couple of times depending on how cloudy your light covers are.
