Problem for Volkswagen 2000 Jetta TDI

2004 volkswagen jetta speedometer doesn't work

when I'm going 60 and over, the speedometer begins to quiver.  It makes using cruise control impossible.  and i'm wondering if there's something with the transmission or if the speedometer sensor or whole thing needs replacing.

-   I have the same problem with the speedometer and the cruise control on a 2003 Jetta. In addition, the speedometer seems to under estimate distance (by about 15% on the highway). Anyone know the cause and/or a solution for this problem?-   johnjd2008

There is a plastic gear inside the transmission that cracks or breaks causing this exact issue.  The speedo sensor gets its reading off of the broken gear by way of a shaft with a small gear that the sensor screws onto and meets with the gear that is broken. The transmission has to be dissassembled.  A new plastic gear put in and reassembled.
