Hi,

Initially, there are only a limited number of reasons why the charge indicator would light up:

  • broken/loose belt;
  • detached/loose/corroded main alternator connection;
  • defective alternator;
  • defective battery.
Since the battery is new, that would leave us with the first three (3) possibilities. Of the three, the first two could be inspected/checked even by the user. A suspected alternator would have to be bench tested to confirm if faulty. Often problem with these alternators are a defective built-in regulator. In most instances, it would be more practical to replace the alternator (if found defective) rather than to repair and just replace the regulator.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

If the charge light is flashing, then staying on, there is something wrong w/ the charging system. Most parts stores offer a free check of your charging system. Have it checked out, there's a good chance u need a new alternator. Let me know what u find. Good luck!

How do i find the fuseable link for the aultonator in a 2002 mazda 626?

by new battery you mean brand new off the shelf in which case the voltage would have been 12.5volts and not 11.5 volts. battery voltage will drop while cranking an engine but should recover to 12 volts when stopped. The alternators charge directly to the battery by the red wire from the back of the alternator to the positive terminal of the battery. The other smaller wires are for the regulator control and charge lights. Take the vehicle to an accredited auto electrician to have the fault rectified.

Mazda 626 starter

Yes, it could be as simple as a bad battery. But it could also be a bad wire from the battery to the starter or bad wire from the fuse block to the starter. Based on your information, I'd say the battery you have now is either junk or just doesn't have enuf amperage to turn the starter over. Perhaps you just needed to put the NEW battery you bought on charge for a day before you installed it. Batteries sit on the shelf for a long time sometimes before they get sold and lose some of their charge. When you buy a battery at a garage, you should always MAKE them load test the battery before you pay for it. That way you'll know EXACTLY how much charge is on it. Don't just expect to install the new battery and think the car will start right up. This is a huge mistake. If they tell u they have to charge it first, just tell them to load test it ONLY and make them let u watch. If they won't do either of those things....go to another garage. That being said, they'll probably not have a problem with u physically seeing the condition of the battery. It's much easier (and smarter) for them to keep ur business and sell u a battery than to shuffle u off and let someone else make $$. Good luck to you.
