Question about 1993 Toyota Previa

1 Answer

Pinion gear We have a 1993 toyota previa. We were driving when the rear axle went out. My husband took off the nose cone (that is what he calls it) from the middle of the axle and notice that the worm gears(what he calls it) were out. Do you know what the actual name is and where we might get another one at.

How do you remove the rear seats in a 1993 Toyota Previa?

hi

The rear seats have 1 x12mm or 13mm bolt securing it to the rear wheel arch.

Remove the cover over the bolt and unbolt the bolt 12mm or 13mm on the left and right side wheel arch

Then under each seat is a metal clip that holds the seats in place lift them up to unclip the seats, and then they can be removed.

cheers

I have a 91 toyota previa and im trying to remove the rear differential..its a 2wd. I have unbolted the drive axle and the differential casing but its my understanding you have to pull lose the rear...

Most differentials are set up like this. There is a steel bar that is i the middle of the gears, this is held in with a bolt. remove the bolt. pull the bar out. Then push the axles in the center. There is a c clip to remove from the axle. They will come out easily. Pull the axles out. Once the axles are out the hog head as they call it, will come out. Just watch as the inner gears will come out also. And will have to be placed in the same spot. Kinda of push in and see. let me know

Oil leaking from rear drivers side brake drum

If it's oil, your axle seal is leaking, and will need to be replaced. That will involve taking the rear diff apart. If it is brake fluid, you just have a leaky wheel cyllinder. Determine for sure which it is before you start spending money.

99 dodge ram van 3500 rear end loud nose when the veh is moving, i have checked the rear oil and it is full.

It could be bad pinion bearings, broken spider gears, etc. inside the differential. It could also be an axle bearing. Check the insides of your rear wheels to see if there is any rear-end grease coming out near the wheel end of the axle. If there is oil coming out, then you have a bad wheel bearing. Otherwise, you will have to remove the differential cover to check for metal particles in the rear end and to see if there are any broken gears.

When do you change the fluid in the rear differencial. I was told by a mechanic that the rear differencial fluid was low and had metal shavings in it, and that the fluid needed to be changed and that it...

I'd say yes. The differential fluid is often overlooked by oil change technicians, even though it's something that should be topped off periodically.

It probably would cost more than that to repair it once it wears out.

I think that changing the fluid would take about an hour, and depending on the garage, and the labor rate, that they might elect to take the rear cover off of the differential, and drain it that way and replace the fluid once it was put back on. He could inspect the gears while the cover was off and tell you how bad it was.'

Do you hear any clunking or gear mesh noises from the rear when putting it in gear or running the vehicle?

Some mechanics would simply top off the fluid and wait until it wears out, which could be several thousand miles in the future.

Use gear oil for it of the recommended viscosity in the service manual.

Generally thicker than motor oil.

So, adding fluid would cost only the amount of the fluid plus some labor.
A bottle of fluid might cost $9.99 or so depending on where you get it.

You might be able to do this yourself if you crawl under there, remove the fill plug at the top, and just add gear oil. If there isn't enough room you might drive it up on some ramps and then crawl under there.

Where is the fuse for the rear wiper in toyota previa 1993

I believe its location is printed on the underside of the fusebox cover. If you haven't found the Previa fusebox, it's in the center of the dashboard just above the radio.

How do you make previa awd into rwd.

The Previa has a special hydraulic center clutch. To convert it to rear wheel drive it would be necessary to replace the whole drive train. Disconnecting the front drive shaft on a 4 wheel drive vehicle will only save you a very small amount of of fuel. The only way to see a substantial fuel savings is by disconnecting the front drive axles from the wheels. This is what manual hubs do and that is why they are still popular.
To see even more fuel savings you would need to remove all of the front drive components and this would remove several hundred pounds and ever bit of weight that you can remove adds up to more fuel savings. But now you will end up changing the center of gravity and the balance of the vehicle.
I have made the assumption that you are trying to increase the fuel mileage of your Previa. Is this correct??
So in the long run you are looking at a major rebuild of your Previa. It would be less costly and less of a headache to go buy a smaller more fuel efficient vehicle.
I know that this isn't the answer you were looking for but this is the proper answer. I hope this helps.
Thanks,
rich
