Automatic transmission sounds like it stuck in 3rd gear
The transmission sounds like it is stuck in 3rd gear also the overdrive quit working at the same time. i do have reverse but no 1st or 2nd gear. i have tried to manually shift from 1st and still nothing. please help because this is driving me crazy.

You need to check the transmission fluid level, if it is low the tranny will not shift. If, however, the fluid is to the proper level then you will need a new transmission.
Try putting new fluid in and look for a leak in the pan gasket, then all you may need is a transmission service. When the service is done the mechanic will look for pieces of metal in the old fluid, if found this is very bad and you will need a new tranny.
You might consider a new or used car, you can definately find a good deal out there!

It's normal that won't shift into 3rd and overdrive because you have transmission code it's a default mode
P0730 Incorrect Gear Ratio
P0742 Torque Converter Clutch Circuit Stuck On

you need to solve those codes first
Fuse # 20 or 21 gets power through ignition. This fuse controls PRNDL indicator, speedometer, tach, & will cause transmission to not shift gears correctly. Ours took off in 3rd gear when put in Overdrive & only ran in 3rd gear. If we tried to manually shift thru gears (auto trans), it had 1st, 3rd, reverse. No 2nd or over drive. Replaced ignition. Fixed problem. Root problem was Electric motor that engaged 4 wheel low side was bad. Every time we used 4 Low side it threw power surge through ignition & blew ignition out. Good Luck.
Usually the transmission needs to be rebuilt in that situation. It's a very common problem if that's the famous automatic overdrive transmsission. AOD I have had three trucks that have done that. It usually starts by shuttering when it shifts and than finally goes out. Sometimes the Lucas transmission treatment gives you a little more time, but it sounds too late for yours. From what I understand (mechanic told me) that when the overdrive goes out, it takes third gear with it. If you drive in hilly areas, that overdrive is shifting in and out all the time as you go up and down hills and wears it out. My Dad had that hapen on his F150 and he replaced his transmission with a junk yard transmission that turned out to have the same problem. I had that transmission replaced with a Jasper rebuilt and it worked great. I think it was $1300 for the rebuilt trans with the old one core trade in. I think when 3rd gear goes out, you can only go about 45mph without over reving the engine. I saw that same problem with a Ford Crown vic with that same transmission and 302 engine that my neighbor had. Did your third gear just go out all of a sudden or were you getting like a shuttering or kind of a grinding sound when it shifted?
it may be a bad transmission modulator valve located on the side of your transmission,vacum operated. a sudden downshift or forward shift when unexpected is sign of a bad modulator valve or a vacum leak to the transmission.best to shop around for a garage w/references when it comes to transmission work though. check all the vacum lines to your transmision,you need to look on the underneath side of your truck on the side of transmission for a loose or disconnected vacum line on the side of the transmission. when you feel the vacum line,follow it to the top of engine,the vacum line is about 3/8th line,and may be disconnected or losing air. to make this short,when you drive the car,start out in low gear and shift the transmission,manually from 1st to 2nd to 3rd does it do right with no slipping? if it does this right and shifts great manually,the modulator valve on the side of the transmissions bad,or a bad vacum leak in-between.thank you for choosing fixya.com
This sounds like its time for a rebuild, sounds like something let go, you could also have a stuck selinoid for that gear, or the clutch plates blew apart, this truck would need to have the computer scanned for codes to see if its a seloniod or speed sensor, if not then the trany would need to be opened and checked, hope this helps.
Sounds like your transmission is in limp mode. This is a fault mode in which the
transmission either loses electrical power or the PCM deactivates all of
the electronics. The transmission will default to max line pressure.
The driver will have Reverse and 3rd, with manual 2nd available by
putting the gearshift in 2 or 1 (doesn't matter). 1st, 4th, and TCC
lockup will not be available. It will not hurt the car to drive it like
this for short periods, but use manual 2nd to get the car moving, and be
aware that the trans will generate more heat than normal while
operating in limp-home mode due to increased torque converter slippage
during 2nd gear starts and no lockup in 3rd gear.
The other from what you described, trans shifts 2nd to 3rd by itself in D or OD and locks the converter : ShiftA solenoid failed. Easy fix in the pan. Or a wiring problem from PCM to trans.. or PCM.

sounds like 3rd gear clutch is out (it might have blew out a lip seal or something)
pull the pan c if there is a lot of black on the bottom of pan (no 3rd = no 4th either) the 3rd gear clutches are engaged along with the 4th gear clutches to make overdrive
if the tcc cable is out of adjustment it mite shift at wot (wide open throttle) max rpm (5000-5500)
if it just 1,2, neutral its probly clutches
