How do you reset the theft system (for the car, not the radio) on a 1996 pontiac sunfire se. the battery went dead and the car has been sitting for a month now. the car will not start with the key. it will...

Your vehicle is equipped with the Passlock theft-deterrent system.
Passlock is a passive theft-deterrent systemT. he system is armed once the keyi s removed from the ignition. Passlock enables fuel if the ignition lock cylinderi s turned with a valid key. If a correct key is not used, fuel is disabled.

During normal operation, the THEFT SYSTEM light will go off after the engine is started. Ln the unlikely event that the engine stalls and the THEFT SYSTEM light flashes, wait until the light stopsf lashing before trying to restart the engine. Remember to release thkee y from the START position as soon as the engine starts. If after several tries the vehicle still does not start, the vehicle may need service. At this time, you may also want to check the fuses. See your Pontiac dealer for service.

If the THEFT SYSTEM light comes on while the engine is running, a problem has been detected and the system may need service. See your dealer for service. In an emergency, call the Pontiac Roadside Assistance Program at 1 -800-ROADSIDE or 1-800-762-3743.

This ans other details can find it in this link for 1996 Pontiac Sunfire - Owners Manual.

I hope helps (remember to rate and comment this).

My key woulded trun now my auto theft system is on an my car will not start

For a 1997 Pontiac Grand AM you have a passlock-1 theft sys. Your ignition cyl has to be replaced or the passlock sensor must be bypassed. You can use a 2300-4000 Ohm resistor and connect it to the Yellow and Black wires coming from the Car's wiring harness to the black connector at the ignition cylinder. You can also try the computer re-learn process which is to leave the key in the ON (not started) position for about 10 mins. If Passlock-1 device is OK, the light should go off. If not, cut the engine side wires from the black Passlock-1 connector and solder in the 2300 Ohm resistor (Radio Shack for about $1) to the yellow and black wires. That signal is sent to the ECM/PCM telling it it's ok not to kill your fuel pump, i.e. car is not being stolen. -Tim

1996 Pontiac Grand AM

Try this first, it takes about 30 min to do. 30-Minute Learn Procedure 1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF. 2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON; the vehicle will not start. 3. Observe the SECURITY tell tale light. After approximately 10 minutes, the light will turn OFF. 4. Turn OFF the ignition switch, and wait 5 seconds. 5. Repeat steps 1 through 4 - two more times - for a total of 3 cycles of 10 minutes. 3x10 = 30 minutes. The vehicle is now ready to relearn the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or passwords on the next ignition switch turn from OFF to CRANK Important: Turn the Ignition Switch OFF. The vehicle learns the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password on the next ignition switch transition from OFF to CRANK. You must turn the ignition OFF before attempting to start the vehicle. 6. Start the engine. The vehicle has now learned the Passlock Sensor Data Code and/or password. 7. With a scan tool, clear any DTCs if needed. History DTCs will self clear after 100 ignition cycles. Without a scan tool you may have momentary starter interruptions while history clears itself. Good luck and hope this helps, keep me posted, be glad to help

Not starting

It was the security Passlock system on my car as well. I did't notice that the security light had come on the first time. Look up Passlock in the owners manual.
  1. You can reset it yourself for free by turning the key to accessory position
  2. Leave for ten minutes on accessory mode.
  3. Turn car off completely
  4. Try to restart.
This fixed my problem on my own after I paid to have it fixed and it happened again the next day.
