Question about 1993 Mercury Cougar

1993 cougar xr7 problem starting

We ran our car on and off tonight for the parade. I turned off the car and when I went to start it there is no noise whatso ever when I turn it over. Lights and everything are working fine. It doesn't look like the battery is the problem because everything works good. It was like one minute it ran and the next minute nothing.
I did notice the alarm light below the steering wheel is blinking once, I thought it used to blink twice??
But im not sure if it is me.
What do you think it could be?

SOURCE: 1991 cougar XR7 speedometer off odometer not working

Headlight switch. Very common on these cars. The knobb that you pull to the left of the steering wheel is the switch that needs replacing. Make sure that the harness on the back isn't melting. This happens on car with factory fog lights or cars that had aftermarket fogs installed without a relay. Hope this helps.

This will sound stupid but check to make sure all the bulbs, yes I said bulbs, as in brake and turn signals are the correct bulb. No kidding. I fought a problem like this in my shop for a week on a mustang. It had a wrong brake light bulb. Just a idea. See if it will start by jumping the 2 posts on the starter solenoid under the hood on the inner fender. It has two battery cables going to it. use 2 heavy screw drivers to do this. Do not tough the metal of teh screw drivers. The solenoid could also be bad.

sounds like the idle control vale is sticking when it is cold. It is located on the throttlebody right at the air inlet

SOURCE: i lost my keys and i need to know how to replace

remove screws from steering colum and remove cover,
you will need a drill, needle nose plyers and a very small screw driver phillips.

step one. drill 1" into cylinder.

located on bottom of colum is a small hole with a pin in it.

step 2, push pin up, if it does not move drill 1/2" more in to cylinder.

stop if you reach a small shaft that is kinda loose and has a brass washer or steel washer on the outside of it. remove small shaft with plyers. once the cylinder is drilled it should unlock, turn it and push the pin up untill it comes out

I am having this problem right now! Same year! The lights and all turn on. When I turn the key, the starter solenoid energizes, as I hear the "click". The battery shows 12.5 volts, and it won't crank off of a jump.

The car started fine 2 days ago before I removed the alternator (battery not charging, new battery, also "new" alternator) for testing. Once it tested good, I was told to try a new battery cable to the alternator. I removed the old, which had a junction block about half way down the cable, and installed the new, which does not. Now I can't get the car to crank, or even try to crank - just clicks. Any help would be appreciated, because the car is not mine and I want to blow it up.

1997 cougar xr7 won't start?


Leaving the key on longer then two seconds does nothing ! When you first turn the key to on the PCM - engine computer will energize the fuel pump relay for 2 seconds ! If you want to turn the pump on for another 2 seconds you would need to turn the key off an then on again ! The only other way the PCM will energize the pump is while cranking the engine , if it sees an input from the crankshaft position sensor . Rather then just replace parts an making part stores rich , why not learn how to do proper diagnostics . Test the electrical circuits . What's the fuel pressure ? What does the mass air flow signal to the PCM look like ? Hooking up a scan tool an viewing engine sensor data etc.... Check the CCRM - constant control relay module . Google CCRM

Have you checked to see if you have fuel pressure?

can you hear the fuel pump running when you turn the key on?

what engine do you have?

92 mercury couagar xr7 - I ran out of gas and now I cant start it with gas in it??


The fuel pump in th car is inside the gas tank, the tiny pump is cooled and lubricated by the gas it sits in, when you run it out of fuel it can seize up the pump bearings from heat, that is what has happened in this case i am sure. You will need to drop the exhaust system and then the fuel tank and replace the fuel pump, also replace the fuel filter.

Mercury xr7 starts then starts coughing and chocking like not


My cougar does the same, it starts and then about 1 minute later (or so) the check engine light comes on and the car idles really high, with black smoke out the exhaust. It stays in second gear i think and it will not shift out of it. Max speed is 40 mph with the rpms screaming, it will go off after a long time but this is agrivating. I have a 94 mercury cougar xr7 3.8 ltr Any help please?

Not saying this for sure, but I had the same problem, and i have a 1994 xr7 V6 3.8 L , and all u need to do is set the idle down manually because your computer could have seen that the injector was stuck open, and tried to turn up idle to keep up with the amount of fuel being pumped, worth a shot :P

1997 3.8 cougar stalling . no power soon after start up


Try looking for engine vacuum leak,around the injector seals inlet etc.Is the air box lid and hoses tight and leak free?Could also be fuel pressure problem Try squeezing the fiel return line with the appropriate tool so you dont damage it and see wether the engine idles properly.If idles better more than likely fuel pressure problem.
