Where is the oil going? Is there evidence of leakage on the ground after parking overnight? My guess is that the garage did not tighten the drain plug or oil filter properly, causing it to leak out. A knocking noise indicates serious damage to the engine, due to insufficient lubrication. The noise u hear is probably a bad crankshaft or connecting rod bearing. If this was due to improper tightening of the drain plug or filter, the garage is responsible (but good luck trying to get them to fix it). This is why I never let anyone change my oil/filter.

I am also working on a 2002 isuzu axiom with the 3.5 engine that also starts for a few seconds then shuts off and will not start back up i did an engine over haul on it, and the engine ran before i removed the engine, did you find the problem?
If your are reaching 4500 rpm, your'e working it pretty hard.
Have you checked the PCV system(including the air filter)?
Many engines in recent production are using very low viscosity oil and have lower standards for oil control.
Some manufacturers are responding that there are no set specifications for oil consupmtion.
You might try changing the oil and using the highest viscosity your owners manual permits.
Keep check frequently, add oil as needed, it's cheaper than rebuilding.
I have found that one can mark (Paint pen) the gears and teeth (One tooth and one corresponding belt rib) on each gear prior to removing the belt. You can then overlay the old belt on a new belt and mark the same spots on the new belt and then install the belt so your marks on the gears and belt line up as they did before you removed the old belt. Given that your timing was right to start with....if done correctly, this will work.
The check engine light illuminates to tell you a problem exists. It also triggers a trouble code. You need to get the vehicle's trouble codes read using an OBD-II code reader. Without that it's just guessing ;-) Post back when you get the codes or look them up at OBD-Codes.com.
Your vehicle’s computer system has self-testing capability. When the computer senses that there is a problem with some of the components it stores the correspondent trouble code(s) in its memory and lights up the Check Engine or Service Engine Soon lights to tell you that there is a problem and you should have the car diagnosed and repaired. Not fluid related, but could be a small problem that's easy to fix now. Even a loose gas cap can turn the light on. Have a code scan, that's the starting point.
