Question about 1987 Subaru Gl 4WD

Gas in oil!!

I have a 87 subaru gl 4wd ,carb. wont go over 50 mph its getting no more than 12 mpg and the rest of the gas is ending up in the oil. rings are good, im SURE the hoses/vacuum system is hooked up right, emissions system is right, timing is right, coils / spark good. ive checked and rechecked and rechecked and rechecked EVERYTHING and it all is good, im great with motors and this motor is frying my brain and making me depressed. ive rebuilt that crazy carb 3 times and im sure its ok... it shouldnt have any problem at all, but somehow it has a serious problem. anyone?

This model doesn't have a regulator, the pressure is controlled by the float, which is new, and set at the correct height. compression checks out ok, it reads 125 on all cylinders after 4 cranks. its frustrating.

Check the fuel pressure regulator, the diaphrams rupture causing fuel to be sucked into engine / you could have an head gasket that needs to be replaced. do a compression test on all cylinders i think you will find atleast 1 cylinder real low.

I am looking into buying a 1987 subaru GL. What kind of gas mileage do they get?

If it is 4x4, around 30-33, a little more for 2wd. Also a manual trans. will get at least 3-4 mpg better. Keep it in tune and a clean fuel filter for best results.

87 Subaru GL Carb/AT. The car starts well and idles. The problem is I have no power going up hills. Flooring it, I go 30-35. I can put the car in nuetral and rev it all the way up so it's not a clogged...

I would change the fuel filter anyway. Fuel filter problem manifest under a load usually. It is easy to do and cheap. This will eliminate one possible cause for your lack of power. Another reason may be your timing. If it pings going up hill also, you can ****** the timing a couple of degrees and/or try some fuel additive or higher octane gas or octane booster.

'87 Subaru GL, fuel delivery

You say the pump is running and you have spark - but are those working when the engine stops?

Discovering those things is probably the first step towards diagnosing the trouble.

How about the possibility of a foreign object in the fuel tank periodically cutting off the supply? It isn't an unusual thing...

Monitoring the fuel pressure while you drive is one way of discovering the truth.
