CAR WON'T START

My 1999 Dodge Intrepid won't start it won t even click when I turn the key any ideas? I replaced the valve covers I put the intake back on, it ran for a little while it was idling at 4000 rpms I messed with a few things it didn't fix the problem, I then shut the car off and tried to start it again and now it won't do anything it doesn't click when you turn the key its as if the battery isn't even connected, I don't know what's wrong, I took it back apart and found the idling problem was a torn EGR tube gasket and replaced it I put it all back together and it still won't do anything and my brain hurts trying to think about it, so I'll leave it to an expert to help me.

I have full power everything works, see initially I had a leak from the thermostat housing I discoved it had a hole in it, I also had two bad oil leaks and it turned out the valve covers were both cracked so I pulled and replaced those and now I am having this problem.

  • sayre213 Nov 16, 2008

I thought of the neutral safety switch and shifting all the gears and nothing, so it's not a chip key it's the same key that came with the car and it has always worked, I had it running and like I said it was running at 4000 rpm I disconnected a few wiring plugs while it was running, that did nothing then I shut the car off, I disconnected the one plug on the very front of the intake right above the thermostat housing I tried to start the car and nothing, i reconnected the plug and still nothing, so I don't know, and no I didn't disconnect the battery, I'm it has to be something simple like a loose wire or something disconnected, also I had sprayed the engine off with some engine degreaser and a garden hose you know to clean the oil that had previously leaked all over the engine, maybe messed up something with that just can't figure it out, hope someone else can, it's always nice to have a fresh mind to come up with ideas.

  • sayre213 Nov 24, 2008

Well I fixed that problem with the car it turned out to be the ground wire on the starter, easy fix, it started and ran good for a day and now when I turn the key I just get a whining noise I don't think the solenoid is is engaging but I'm not sure, anyone have any ideas??

  • sayre213 Nov 24, 2008

Yeah I tapped it with a ratchet and on that car the starter wires only go on one way ones a plug and one slides on with a nut, all the connections are tight and I know if there was a power problem or a starter relay I wouldn't even get the whining from the starter so it's got to be the solenoid.

It could be as simple as a bad battery connection. I had this problem this summer and that was it.

Do the dash lites come on when the key is turned on? do you have a good connection at battery? is it in park? what were you trying to repair initially?

i think zappanut is on the right track with the starter. maybe have someone hold the key over to start while giving the starter a little rap with a hammer (not hard). can also ck start signal from ignition switch at small wire on starter with a test light. how long did the engine run at 4000 rpm? it does turn over by hand, right? there are no noises at all when trying to start?

that does sound like a starter. did you try giving starter a rap to see if it will engage? im sure once you found starter ground problem, you ck'd rest of connections

I know it sounds crazy , but do you by chance have a chip key ? Like , does your ignition key have a chip in it ? (BIG head on the ignition key).
Maybe you grabbed a duplicate key that wasn't a coded chip key?
Being as I doubt that ... just taking shots at some easy fixes...lol
When you were doing the work on the top of the motor...did you disconnect the battery?
There are more than just the pos and neg wires connected to the battery... There are fusible links (thin wire inside of thicker wire..like fuses). maybe you pulled on one and broke the link?? Or didn't reconnect all of the harness to the terminals on the battery?¿?¿?

ah... did you check to make sure the shifter is in Park...?
Try neutral! ( neutral safety switch)

using a degreaser on areas with wire and other plastic and rubber (petroleum products) is not a good idea...
If you are getting dash lights when the ignition is on... and no continuity to the starter.... Hmmm.
Have you tried jumping the starter relay? (jumper cable from positive to the big red wire on the starter)

if the starter is turning , then it is a solenoid problem now.
    is it a 3.2 or 2.7 engine?

well salvage yard starters are only $10 , so I would go that route.
I don't know your zip code , or I would locate you a local one , but even with shipping costs , this should
    not be more than $25.

share your zip if this is too far away... my salvage yard search engines can find just about anything and on parts like this where there are a million available... I can assure you I can find you one local.

here is the cheapest one within 200 miles of you... I would call the one in NJ and see what shipping would be to your home first , as that one is $10 and pretested. This guy wants $35 + shipping... so ?¿?¿

The car stoped but will turn over but won't start

The engine is port fuel injected, so there are injectors for each cylinder.
Why did you replace one injector ??
Have you checked for spark at the plugs and fuel pressure ?

I had a new key made and it turns on the car but wont start it....if this is a computer issue is there anyway to bypass it? 1999 dodge intrepid es

Easy way to tell, look at your originally keys. When they first started using key chips as a security feature the keys with black covers where normal keys but if your original key had a gray rubber type cover it has a security chip in it. That means the only place to get a spare key made is the dealer because they have to order the key using your VIN. The only way to bypass this is to replace the ignition switch and the ECM. The ECM will cost $1600 + on it's own.
