Possibly the return spring on carburetor arm has broken or come off and letting the revs too maximum when turning key with motor off get someone to push accelerator while you investigate whats happening at carburetor end at worst it could also be a broken accelerator cable hope this is helpful glenn.........

did you manually move throttle to closed position. also check air bypass/idle air cont valves

  • darin brown Nov 16, 2008

mounted near the housing near throttle plates/it bleeds air around plate for cold start/(like a choke).

lissen for a hiising sound/vaccum leak will raise rpm on fuel injected vehicles

Check your Fuel Lines and your Fuel Pump. (I just fixed a problem with my 2001 Isuzu Rodeo Fuel Return Line).

Also remember that in Rodeos, as soon as you turn your car key to turn the ignition on (just to make the dashboard lights go on) a certain amount of gasoline gets pumped to your engine in preparation of you turning the key all the way to crank the ignition and start the car. In other words, even before you turn the key all the way to crank the ignition, the Fuel Pump will pump some gasoline through the Fuel Lines to your engine (it will pump the gasoline for about 4 seconds then stop). So when you go to start your Rodeo, remember to turn the key with one continuos motion so that you start the ignition cranking while the gasoline is being actively pumped.

In addition, you should never turn the ignition lights on without turning the key all the way to start the engine. Doing so could cause that bit of gasoline that was pumped to start the engine to just sit there and create problems.
