My V8 is doing the same thing, and get this; I put in a different tranny 3000 miles ago, due to the same thing happening, also. It was runni ng great; accelerating, shifting smoothly, cruising up and down the N.Y. STATE THRUWAY, with no problems. Then all of a sudden I have no forward gears at all. reverse works fine. I even went to a dealer a bought a tranny dipstick($40.00) to verify my fluid level is good. I also, drained the only 3000 mile old fluid, and replaced it with Castrol Import fluid. still nothing. I can't believe that 2 trannies can go bad in the same car the same way with no warning. I am a 40 year old dad, who doesn't beat on his cars at all, so I can't figure it to be the tranny. My hunch is that the problem is electrical(imagine that in an Audi). I've checked all the plug connections on the tranny, and even swapped out all the relays under the passenger side floorpad just because I'm desparate. I don't want to let this car go for parts, but I can't afford to replace the tranny again. Any ideas, I'm listening. Chris(cjfairley@aol.com)

Hi! I have no forward gears till I switch on 1st gear manually. Then, after the speed is over 20 - 30 km/h I switch usual drive (D) position and everything is working normally till the car stops or speed falling under 20-30 km/h. After that I have to use again manually switching to the 1st gear. I read that someone has the same problem. Unfortunately he hadn't solution ... :) yet.

i would check the throttle butterfly for a carbon build up that may keep it from closing completely. have seen this cause stalling when returning to idle rpm. Best to try to remove and clean from both sides to get good results.this is just one of many possible problems. Hope it helps if so please let me know with a reply and good luck

We have a 90 Quattro V8. Last summer I changed

Your V8 Audi has two necessary sensors that malfunction due to their placement in extreme heat on the lower left side of the engine just inside of the header/down pipe connection. They read the flywheel position for the engines computer ECU. The reference sensor is always suspect, but the speed sensor may need to be changed, as well. The wire connectors to the sensors that sit above the FL suspension can be tested, or just replace both sensors to get some quality time with your V8.

1990 Audi Quattro V8

If the problem is off and on -indeed it is most likely your transmission control module...I have found it handy to have a v8 parts car @ the ready for these type of quick checks.
However if it is a permanent problem it might be something that can be reset by an audi mechanic who has the reset computer box.....only takes a minute.
