Question about 2002 Jaguar X-Type

1 Answer

Engine malfunction light just came on.

Car is regularly serviced, just had major 70,000 mile work up. Car is not driving any differently since light went on. Manual says "specialized diagnostic equipment required to repair such faults.". I can not get it to someone for a day or two. Is it safe to drive? and if so, for how long or about how many miles?

As long as the check engine light is not flashing, it is safe to drive the car. However, you always want to have diagnostics run as soon as possible. I had a problem with my x-type before where the check engine light would come on but performance was not affected. Turned out to be a faulty gas tank cap. From other sources I have found out one other common problem is the hoses under the plastic engine block cover. They tend to crack easily.

To be able to assist you better, we do need to find out why the check engine light came on. There are plenty of places (AutoZone is one of them) that will hook your car up to a diagnostic computer for free. That should give you a better idea as to where the problem might be originating from. If you can, post the result of a diagnostic test here. I might be able to help you better once I have that information.

Thank you for using the fixya forums!

No but the dealer is saying I need to do the spark plugs and have the transmission flushed which I did at 31,000 miles, I am now at 70,000 miles I am a senior citizen on a fixed income of 796. a month. ...

You do not need plugs or a transmission flush at this short a mileage interval on this car unless the car is operated in the "severe" service range, this is high speed driving in hot weather or dusty conditions or with a heavy load in mountainous area. I suggest you do these services at 60,000 miles for regular driving, which is what most cars fit into to.

My Engine light came on this morning...

VW is a very good car, I would take it to any auto parts place like autozone where they can pull codes, could be some thing as a loose gas cap, the work you have done to your car is normal wear and teard, keep your head up.

How many miles before my 97 deville starts with major problems. and what do i do to keep it running like new

It really depends on the treatment your vehicle has received up until now. I recommend a pro-active approach to preserve whatever life remains in your vehicle. By that I mean scheduled maintennance, oil and filter changes, regular inspections for signs of wear and taking care of issues as they occur. Do not let problems pile up, as you can be overwhelmed. Inspect belts and hoses regularly, make sure you change air and fuel filters, keep it clean and get to know your car. Don't mistreat it!

"service engine soon" sign keep blinking Nissan 1998 quest

HI. the check engine light will illuminate when a sensor fault is detected. all sensors on your vehicle work in conjunction with the CPU on board. they relay information for the CPU to process. this information allows the CPU to initiate certain actions like fuel pump operation and proper charging of the battery and proper coolant flow as well. if one of the vital sensors start to malfunction and cant send and receive any information to the cpu, it will launch a self diagnostic alert , which is this check engine light. This will become illuminated to inform you of some sort of malfunction within the engine itself. the best thing now is to take this vehicle to the dealership for a quick scan. Once the problem is found, they can fix it and shut off the check or service engine light.

As for the life span of a Nissan transmission, these builds will last quite a while if you take good care and preform proper maintenance. The the normal life span of a typical mini van transmission is 100,000 miles. This nissan's transmission should get about 120,000 or more. The key to a long life span of a transmission is good care and proper maintenance like, changing the filters regularly and flushing the contents as well as changing the fluid every 60,000 miles.

Slippage of any gear cycle.
Hard shifting and abnormal grinding during gear changes on a hill.
Miss shifts.(not being able to shift on time or sticking in a certain gear over the rpm rate)
Black transmission fluid or metal fragments inside the transmission pan.
Gear shift slipping out of drive or reverse is a failure point as well.

Please rate and god bless:)
