2001 Mitsubishi Galant - Key won't turn

My dad backed my car out of the driveway this morning. Now my key and my mom's spare key for the car won't turn in the ignition. The car is in Park.

I need a spare key to my mitsubishi galant 2001, but I have a chip on my key that will cost me $80. Is there a place I can get a spare key for my car at a cheaper price? Thanks

Try turning your steering wheel while turning the key. Sometimes the wheel lock will prevent the key from turning.

In my Galant the problem was that the key was really worn down and it didn't have any ridges that would engage the spindles inside the lock cylinder. I almost changed out the whole lock cylinder when I decided to call out a locksmith. He made a key (yes, with a chip) that was slightly larger that engaged the spindles and let the key turn. He also said if I came into the shop he could make one that was to exact specs from the manufacturer as the code is located inside the door panel. I haven't made it there yet but the other key is working great for now. Will likely get the original made very soon.

My 2006 Chrysler 300 anti theft light is on and my and the rest of the lights on the dash I can't turn the car all the way off or even turn the engin over what do I do please

Good Morning Thomas:
Sounds like an ignition switch problem. Your key has a chip in it or is supposed to, and your ignition switch has a sensor in it that can recognize the chip. If you do not get a match the theft light will stay on. Not bing able to turn the ignitions switch all the way off sounds like the shifting linkage my be out of alignment or the car is no in park. Some times I try to turn off my engine while I am still in reverse. Usually placing the car in park solves this problem (sorry, I am sure you checked that, but just saying). If you have a spare key with the chip you know like your wife's set try that key and if the problem continues I would spend the money and have the dealer look at it. On the other hand changing out the ignition switch is not that hare if you have the correct key and a punch pin ( a paper clip might work but I be leave in buying the correct tools). With the car in park and the engine off you turn the switch to the run position without engaging the starter then push in that pin and the ignition will come right out. There is probably a plug on it for the sensor. You can then replace it with a new matching ignition and key. But remember the new key will not fit your door.
Best of luck
'RR

Gear shifter is in Park, but dash reads it's in Reverse. Car won't turn over because it is in Reverse now.

You have to locate where the park ignition switch is located. Some are on the transmission and some are in the column under the dash. It probably got moved.

either fit a manual gearbox or change the control computer for the autobox,no work then do what i did and buy a old van and do kerbside mechanics better than nothing , i know when its raining and cold but at least you will earn a living and buy your spares from a autofactor and not a corner shop

Ignition switch won't release key when it is put in park. But when I removed switch and key tumbler, the key tumbler/cylinder releases key. Why won't the key release when it is in park?

Most newer models have a safety feature called
shift interlock. This prevents the key from being turned back
to the lock position if you forget to place the gear selector in park.
Depending on the model,
If it uses a cable, it may be sticking or needs adjusting.
If it uses an electrical solenoid. may be blown fuse or park switch.
Tap, shake, and pull up on the shifter and make sure it's in park.

HI, my car for the past few months has been giving me trouble with not wanting to sart right away. The key just goes click click click and then the engine will turn over and it will sart no problem. I...

It could be the solenoid on the starter that is clicking and needs replacing.

My question is--- Why is this still an issue a few months later?
--- You need to start diagnosing these problems when they first happen,so you resolve them and have reliable transportation again.

Was the Battery Tested in any way or you just replaced it in a wish and hope type approach?
