Black smoke from engine of 1998 dodge avenger

2.5L V6 car has 140,000 miles, the smoke is coming from somewhere down between the fire wall and the engine I removed the upper air intake saw some black residue on the alternator but i cant pinpoint source of smoke, Smoke starts within a minute or so of starting the car, EGR pipe got hot quickly, Oh and I just recently replaced the drive and AC belts, the belt deflection looks good but they sqeal sometimes in the morning when it is chilly and damp I dont know if that could be part of the problem.

The fact that there is black smoke coming from the car is concerning, have you changed the oil and oil filters? if you have done this and there is still thick black acrid smoke coming from the engine then "big end" is going! in other words the engine is ready to die

White smoke from the tail pipe is caused by moisture in the engine being burned off. Some is normal on a cold engine but the rattle and amount of smoke you describe are a sure sign of a blown head gasket allowing coolant to enter the cylinders.

98 Dodge Avenger 2.5L V6 isn't getting any spark.

Do you mean it's actually grinding while trying to start or it just cranks & won't fire?If it's the latter,i've had to replace 2 distributors on my 99 2.5 because the sensor which isn't serviceable has failed.

I really hate to say this because i don't recommend used parts to be put into a vehicle especially when it comes to electrical or computer components, but you may be able to check your local parts yards and see if they may have what you need if you are on a tight budget. Or you may have to buy a new computer. I would have also take it somewhere else for a second opinion before spending the money on a new computer. ope this helps.
