Looking at buying a 1999 accord

It has 166,000 km or a little more than 100,000 miles. when should the timing belt be replaced? Also, how about the transmission, it is an automatic, how about it's longetivity?

Thanks ghawesdip. I happened to pass on the car because it was being sold by a broker and he wanted way too much for it in my opinion. Also, he didn't know any of the repair history and I have read that 98 - 03 Accords had transmission problems. It was hard to pass on it, but he was unwilling to move on the price. If he was willing to move a bit I was prepared to go thru the hoops to check it out and buy it.

Timing belt

Nancy, the Honda recommendations are to change belt 100,000 Km/ 60000 miles or every 7 years which ever occurs first. So if timing belt has not been changed, YES change it. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

1995 accord timing belt schedule

If the timing belt has been replaced recently, a mechanic can inspect it taking the cover off, and tell you, that won't cost big money.

If it has been replaced 50K miles ago it wont be possible to know.

If the car has 114K miles, I suggest taking it to a mechanic and replacing the timing belt.

When should timing belt be replsced

When it gets loose even a little bit. But if its a chain you can squeeze it in the middle between the gears and it shouldn't move

The new timing belt jumped

no it is not. (late answer) is this a double post?

all timing belts jump,
1: every 60k miles for most. ever read the service list.
some top quality belts go bad at 100k miles. so.....????

Honda uses an "interference" engine design.
do not skip this service, or the whole engine can grenade !!!
honda quote, pasted.
However, since these engines utilize an interference design, it is highly recommended to at least inspect the timing belt at 60,000 mile (96,000 km) intervals. It is an even better idea to replace the belt at these intervals. On 1990-94 models, Honda recommends the timing belt to be replaced at 90,000 mile (144,000 km) intervals. On 1995 models, the recommended interval is 60,000 miles (96,000 km).end quote.

and if the last guy put in a POS china belt, well, you are hosed.
no name belts are junk, never ever use one,
BTW i run Gates belts.

Does the 93 have. A timing belt or chain?

Ask your local auto parts store, they can look it up. It may depend on your specific engine, the 2003 Honda Accord used a chain on the 4 cylinder but a belt on the V6.
The belt should (usually) be replaced every 60000 miles (100000 km), while the chain should last the life of the engine (150000+ miles).
On many engines, if the belt breaks, it can cause expensive damage to the valves and/or pistons, so you want to make sure you replace it as scheduled.

When should cam belt be changed on 1999 vauxhall astra 1.6 16v car. I am looking to buy car with 61000 mileage and 7 stamps by vauxhall dealer. Seller doesn't know if belt has been done. Thanks

For 1999 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 16V timing belt replacement interval is: 60000 km (37500 miles), or 48 months (4 years). Replace also tensioner roller, (the same interval) !
If you don't know precisely if timing belt has been done, then replace it obligatory !!!

Please rate my response. Thanks!

1999 Tercel. Timing belt/water pump interval change?

Hello tinaromano1: The factory specification are to replace the belt every 90,000 miles in severe service. I would recommend to replace at 90,000 no matter what the service would be. Keep in mind should the belt break there is always a chance engine damage may occur. Should you need further help just ask. Thank You for using FixYa. Roger

Change timing belt

if you have the 3.3L or the 3.8L, it has a timing chain and not a belt. if you have the 3.0L belt replacement is every 60,000 miles.
If it ia belt you will only need to purchase the belt around 40 dollars
